FX is heading to Transylvania with a series order for Very Young Frankenstein.

The comedy, based on Mel Brooks’ classic Young Frankenstein, has been in development for nearly a year and received a pilot order last September. Brooks is an executive producer of the series, which will star Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells and Spencer House. FX and Hulu will carry Very Young Frankenstein.

Stefani Robinson (Atlanta, What We Do in the Shadows), who wrote the pilot, and Taika Waititi, who directed, will executive produce Very Young Frankenstein with Garrett Basch, Brooks and his producing partner Kevin Salter, and Young Frankenstein producer Michael Gruskoff. 20th Television is the studio.

“Very Young Frankenstein blends inspiration from the fan-favorite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” said FX Entertainment president Nick Grad. “In the hands of FX veterans Stefani, Taika and Garrett, alongside the iconic Mel Brooks, we know that fans will have as much fun watching this series as we’re having making it.”

Details on the story of Very Young Frankenstein are scant. The title implies that it will be set before the 1974 film, in which Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced Fronk-en-steen), played by Gene Wilder, is lured back to Transylvania and picks up his grandfather Victor’s experiments with re-animating the dead. Along with Galifianakis, Wells and House, Kumail Nanjiani, Nikki Crawford and Cary Elwes also were cast in the pilot.

Young Frankenstein, a loving parody of 1930s monster movies, also starred Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn and Kenneth Mars. Brooks directed the film, which he co-wrote with Wilder.
