Bruce Dern recently opened up about an intense moment he witnessed between Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt while filming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival with PEOPLE, Dern remembered the director suddenly stopping Pitt after the actor allegedly “cut the camera” during a scene.
Dern played George Spahn in the 2019 film, the elderly owner of the ranch occupied by the Manson Family. He was filming a scene where Pitt’s character, stuntman Cliff Booth, visits Spahn to check on him. Dern explained that he was lying in bed, acting groggy when Pitt unexpectedly interrupted the moment.
According to Dern, Tarantino immediately reacted. “The look on Quentin’s face — I mean, he was insanely grave,” Dern recalled. He said Tarantino asked Pitt, “Brad, what did you just do?” After Pitt responded that he had cut the camera, the director reportedly fired back: “Never again in your life will you ever cut a camera, or you’ll be dead in this business. That’s my domain. Don’t stop behavior.”
Dern also shared that Pitt calmly replied, “Well, that wasn’t in the script what he said,” referring to Dern improvising dialogue during the scene. The veteran actor admitted he ad-libbed one of George Spahn’s lines, telling Cliff Booth, “I don’t know who you are, but you touched me today.”
The film eventually became one of Tarantino’s biggest hits. Brad Pitt even won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for playing Cliff Booth. The cast also included Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, Timothy Olyphant, Austin Butler, and Lena Dunham. Tarantino and Pitt already had a successful history together before the movie, having worked on Inglourious Basterds in 2009.
