Elsewhere, Sir Peter Jackson – who was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or – described it as “a bit unfair” that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had recently banned performances and scripts produced by AI from its awards.

Discussing the infiltration of the technology into Hollywood, which has led to major strikes and demands for protection for writers and actors, the Lord of the Rings director insisted that he did not “see the issue”, arguing that “it’s just a special effect”.

Tilda Swinton, meanwhile, railed against the madness of having to “prove you are a human” in a world increasingly driven by technology.

The actress said: “The thing I can’t get past is you saying, yes, you have to prove that your script’s not written by AI, I understand that, but when you say prove that you are a human?

“I mean, I feel this should be the byline for the festival of Cannes – all cultural festivals, all cultural endeavours: let’s prove that we’re humans. That’s what we’re here to do.”
