One of Hollywood’s biggest stars could be joining Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU’s most ambitious crossover yet. A new rumor suggests Marvel is in talks with a legendary A-lister for Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars could star Tom Cruise
Scooper MyTimeToShineHello claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Marvel is talking to Tom Cruise about a role in Avengers: Secret Wars. The post stated, “Marvel IS talking to Tom Cruise to have a role in Avengers Secret Wars.” However, the scooper did not specify which character Cruise might play in the film.
Fans previously theorized about Cruise joining the MCU during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Many believed an empty Illuminati chair in that film was meant for Cruise’s Superior Iron Man. That casting never materialized, but the conversation around it persisted among fans online.
The rumors stem from Cruise’s history as the original choice for Iron Man back in 2008. Cruise ultimately passed on the role because he wanted more creative control over the project. He once explained his decision by saying, “I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be” (via IGN). Director Jon Favreau then approached Sam Rockwell before ultimately casting Robert Downey Jr. in the career-defining role.
Downey initially earned just $500,000 for the first Iron Man film. He later secured $100 million paychecks through a lucrative contract clause. Downey now returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Meanwhile, Cruise and Downey share an interesting Hollywood connection from the 1980s. Downey was once considered for the role of Maverick in Top Gun before Cruise landed that part.
Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. The Russo brothers are directing the film, with filming set to begin in mid-2026. Kevin Feige has called Secret Wars “as ambitious a project as we’ve ever embarked on.” The film will reportedly reset the MCU with a new singular timeline and introduce a recast X-Men team.
