Christopher Nolan is heading back to theaters this summer with The Odyssey, and the anticipation is already enormous. Per Deadline, Universal’s big-screen take on Homer’s epic could open between $80 million and $100 million domestically when it lands July 17.

It’s a wide range. Then again, Nolan has never fit neatly into any standard box-office formula. His movies turn into events. People show up not just for a story, but to catch something built for the biggest screen they can find. That instinct is exactly what the early The Odyssey box office tracking is picking up on.

This time he takes on one of history’s most famous adventures. And he’s doing it with a cast that reads like an awards-season lineup.

Matt Damon Leads The Odyssey On An All-Star Journey

Matt Damon anchors the whole thing as Odysseus, the Greek hero clawing his way home after the Trojan War. It’s a role made for a sweeping, emotional epic. Here’s a warrior, husband and father, all at once, up against impossible odds on a long and brutal trip. The Matt Damon The Odyssey casting gives that journey real weight.

Leading the ensemble is one seriously deep bench. You’ve also got Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal. Nolan won’t say much about his take just yet. But a cast like that already has everyone buzzing about The Odyssey.

Zendaya steps in as Athena, the goddess guiding and protecting Odysseus along the way. The Zendaya The Odyssey role plants her right at the story’s center. Fans of Zendaya’s Christopher Nolan movie already want to see how he plays a mortal hero against the forces tugging at his fate.

Christopher Nolan Makes The Odyssey A Theater Event

A lot of the excitement traces back to Christopher Nolan‘s long devotion to the theatrical experience. The director’s films lean on huge practical visuals and immersive sound. They pay off most for anyone watching on a massive screen, ideally one of those premium large formats.

Here’s the kicker. The Odyssey gets a three-week exclusive run in IMAX, a real vote of confidence from Universal and the filmmaker. Demand for The Odyssey IMAX 70mm tickets has run especially hot. Reports point to 70mm IMAX screenings selling out well ahead of release.

That’s not normal for most films. It tells you Christopher Nolan has built a loyal crowd. They plan early, travel for those exclusive IMAX screenings and treat one of his releases like an occasion.

Can Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Follow ‘Oppenheimer’?

Nolan‘s last film, Oppenheimer, grew into far more than a prestige drama. It became a full-blown cultural moment. Viewers wanted to watch Christopher Nolan wrestle a thorny historical figure onto an epic canvas.

That win only sharpened the curiosity about his next move. The Odyssey tells a very different kind of story. Still, it holds the same pull for audiences chasing something ambitious and cinematic. That appetite keeps the Nolan box office gross trending sky-high.

Homer’s tale has shaped countless movies, books and TV series over the centuries. Strip it down, though, and it’s deeply human. Survival, loyalty, temptation, the ache of home. Those threads give this Christopher Nolan film plenty to dig into beyond the action and spectacle.

The Odyssey Box Office Tracking Sets Up A Huge Summer

That July slot also drops The Odyssey into a prime stretch of the summer calendar. This one will not arrive quietly. Between the massive cast and the premium-format rollout, the summer blockbuster tracking already pegs it as a must-see. Early The Odyssey box office tracking backs that up.

Exactly where the opening weekend lands remains anyone’s guess. Still, the appetite could not be clearer. The Odyssey opening weekend box office could set the tone for the whole summer. Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon are carrying an ancient story back to the big screen, and audiences appear eager to take the journey.

The Odyssey opens in theaters July 17.
