Disney is reportedly exploring a plan to offer some of its premium streaming content completely free. This is seen as a major strategy shift to combat the growth and competition from YouTube and other Hollywood streaming giants. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Business Insider reports that the entertainment giant is discussing making select movies and television shows accessible on Disney+ without requiring a paid subscription or paywall. The initiative was discussed internally during a streaming town hall last week by Disney’s product and tech chief, Adam Smith. Another source told the publication that Disney’s streaming strategy emphasised that these talks are part of an ongoing effort to find new ways to better serve global fans. Currently, a standard Disney+ and Hulu bundle costs US consumers $12.99 a month with advertisements, or $19.99 a month without ads.
The rise of free TV
Disney’s sudden interest in a free tier comes as paid streaming platforms grapple with subscriber fatigue. As platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Max have consistently raised their monthly prices, consumers are increasingly migrating toward free, ad-supported options.In January, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan cited a Nielsen survey, saying that YouTube has been the number 1 in streaming watchtime in the US for nearly three years. Data from the rating agency also revealed that free streaming services have experienced massive growth in viewership share on TVs compared to their paid rivals. By introducing a robust free tier, Disney+ could significantly stand out in the crowded market. While competing platforms like Apple TV+ and Paramount+ occasionally let non-subscribers sample individual pilot episodes, paid streaming networks generally lack comprehensive free options.
YouTube and short-form video
Disney and its Hollywood rivals are also said to be moving away from traditional long-form movies and TV episodes, actively experimenting with short-form videos, podcasts, and “micro-dramas” – vertically shot shows popular on platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts.Both Disney+ and Paramount+ have recently integrated vertical video clips directly into their flagship streaming apps. Disney executives have made it clear to staff that prioritizing “product and technology innovation” in the streaming space is a top corporate objective.
