According to Blast, Heritage has pointed out that the marketing is trying to compensate for Depp’s recent debacles. The critic also has reservations regarding the trailer, which has Depp saying, “I’m back.” In response, Heritage wonders whether the publicity is centered on Depp’s Hollywood comeback or the film itself.
The critic also questions whether enough time has passed since the court cases and abuse allegations against Depp. Though Heritage believes that the film’s horror elements under director Ti West could suit the actor’s public image right now, he is also suggesting that a darker role would have been more suitable.
Depp suffered a loss of credibility after he became involved in various legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard. Heard originally accused him of domestic abuse, which he strictly denied. The actor also lost his UK libel case against The Sun in 2020. He, however, came out on top with compensation from his ex-wife from a 2022 U.S. defamation lawsuit.
The controversies deeply affected Depp’s Hollywood career. He was dropped from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise after the U.K. ruling. Disney also moved in “a different direction” with “Pirates of the Caribbean”, according to testimony from Depp’s longtime agent during the Virginia trial.
“Ebenezer” will be Depp’s first major studio release in years. The critic has noted that the success of the movie will reveal Depp’s current status in the industry.
Depp plays Scrooge in Paramount’s new take on Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol”. Directed by a horror filmmaker, the movie takes a darker turn when Scrooge is haunted by terrifying versions of the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The film also boasts a star-studded cast that includes Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Daisy Ridley, and Sam Claflin.
