Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, The Odyssey, has become a global box office sensation, grossing more than US$700 million worldwide while continuing its successful run in Sri Lankan cinemas. Inspired by the timeless Greek classic ‘The Odyssey’, one of the two great epics of ancient Greek literature attributed to Homer, the film has captivated audiences with its grand scale, compelling storytelling and spectacular visual experience, making it one of the year’s biggest theatrical successes.
After just 12 days in theatres, The Odyssey has emerged as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, earning over US$700 million worldwide. The only films ahead of it at the 2026 Hollywood box office are June’s Toy Story 5, which has grossed US$1.02 billion, April’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with US$1.001 billion, and Michael, which has also crossed US$1.001 billion.
Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem ‘The Odyssey’ features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The story follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he embarks on a perilous journey home after the victories of ‘Trojan War’. As he sails across the Mediterranean with his surviving companions, they soon find themselves battling not only the elements, but an array of deadly obstacles, mythical creatures and a series of deadly trials that test their courage, endurance and determination to return home.

Nolan began writing the script in March 2024 and secured the project with Universal Pictures by October to make the US 250 million budget film. The Odyssey was announced in December. Casting took place from late 2024 through early 2025 and Damon was confirmed for the lead role in February 2025.
Shooting took place from February to August 2025 in the location in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta and the Universal Studios in Los Angeles.
‘The Odyssey’ is now being screened at Scope Cinemas Multiplex IMAX: Havelock City Mal, Scope Cinemas: Colombo City Center, Aqua Lite 3D Cinema: Negombo, Liberty Scope Cinemas: Kiribathgoda, PVR Cinema, Majestic Cineplex and other theatres around the country.
