After many years of struggling to recover from the pandemic, the North American box office is experiencing a prosperous summer. According to Variety, summer movie revenue in 2026 is forecast to exceed 4 billion USD, marking a remarkable return to the theater market.
Data from Rentrak shows that domestic box office revenue in the US this year is increasing by about 10% compared to the same period in 2025. If it exceeds the 4 billion USD mark in the 4-month film season, 2026 will be the second time since the market pandemic to reach this level, after 2023 – when the two phenomena “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” created a major boost.
The noteworthy point of this summer is that the attraction does not only come from familiar blockbuster brands. Successful film studios combine brands with stable audiences and unexpected works that create a box office effect.
As of August 11, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” leads in revenue, with $655 million in North America and $1.67 billion globally. Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster, “The Odyssey”, also exceeded expectations when it grossed $460 million in North America and $1.1 billion globally after 4 weeks of screening.
Toy Story 5″ by Disney and Pixar continues to prove the strength of long-standing brands when joining the film club that achieved a global revenue of 1 billion USD, including 470 million USD from the North American market.
Meanwhile, despite being released in the spring, Lionsgate’s biography film about Michael Jackson still maintained its appeal for many months and reached 1 billion USD globally in July.
Besides blockbusters, “dark horses” like “Obsession” and “Backrooms” also create surprises. The success of these works shows that projects without major brands can still attract audiences if they have suitable ideas and create a word-of-mouth effect.
The tastes of young audiences, especially Gen Z, are considered one of the new drivers of the box office. Low-budget horror films, event-oriented works and old brands are being rediscovered by audiences through social networks, creating a new audience for cinemas.
Hollywood still has many “cards” in the rest of the summer. “Minions & Monsters” and Moana’s live-action version are expected to continue to boost revenue.
The combination of big brands and unexpected phenomena is helping the summer 2026 box office have a more diverse appearance. Instead of completely relying on a few blockbusters, the market is witnessing many films of different scale attracting audiences back to theaters.
