The Hollywood Reporter hosted a THR Live on Instagram on Monday with an Emmy-focused conversation led by Beatrice Verhoeven, awards editor, and Brande Victorian, deputy awards editor.
As final Emmy voting began on Monday, the two awards experts broke down which categories seem like locks, which categories are still up in the air and how a recent rule change might reveal five winners in one category, variety talk series.
The Pitt led all nominees with a total of 25, with Hacks following with 24 (a record for a comedy series for nominations in a single year). Newcomer Widow’s Bay received a whopping 19 nominations, leading the total for all new shows. Verhoeven and Victorian discussed whether The Pitt will take home the drama Emmy again, or whether Pluribus might swoop it, while also discussing the chances of Widow’s Bay taking home the gold over Hacks. Or will it be Emmy darling Shrinking?
They also dove into the acting categories and who is most likely to win the trophy next month. Will Noah Wyle win for The Pitt again, or might Mark Ruffalo nab it for Task? And will Ruffalo’s co-star Tom Pelphrey, who delivered a stunning performance in the HBO Max series, take home the supporting drama actor Emmy? Will Rhea Seehorn finally get her long-deserved Emmy recognition? After all, her recurring omissions for her role as Kim Wexler on Better Caul Saul is widely considered one of the biggest snubs in modern Emmy history.
Last year’s winner in the best supporting actress in a drama series category, The Pitt‘s Katherine LaNasa, is up in the same category this year but is competing against her own co-stars Sepideh Moafi, Fiona Dourif and Taylor Dearden.
Additionally, Victorian and Verhoeven talked about who campaigned hard this Emmys season (we’re looking at you, Widow’s Bay and Hacks), and who didn’t really — and why.
Verhoeven and Victorian also gave viewers the chance to ask their most pressing questions via Instagram ahead of the live broadcast, as well as a live chat box during the stream. One question asked was whether Only Murders in the Building will win an Emmy. The show itself received a series nod, but Martin Short was the only lead actor to get a nom this year.
Lastly, the duo discussed the opportunity for some historic wins, mainly among The Pitt cast, some of whom self-submitted for Emmy consideration.
The 78th annual Emmys will air live on NBC and Peacock on Monday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
