Insidious: Out of the Further hits theaters this weekend to mark the latest installment in Screen Gems‘ venerable horror franchise, facing off against the high-flying Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the summer winds down.

Sony Pictures releases Insidious: Out of the Further in roughly 2,700 North American theaters on Friday, with director Jacob Chase’s film collecting TK in Thursday previews. The studio projects an opening weekend around $23 million for the sixth title in the series that kicked off with 2011’s Insidious.

Out of the Further, which also counts Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse Atomic Monster as producers, carries an $18 million production budget. It holds a 59 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with Frank Scheck writing in his review for The Hollywood Reporter that the film “proves routine in its elaborate plot machinations.”

Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye star in the movie that centers on a young mother who can bring spirits back with her to the real world. Out of the Further follows 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which saw the return of original series stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. That one opened to an impressive $33 million domestically before grossing $189 million worldwide throughout its run.

Another newcomer in wide release is Jason Statham’s action title Mutiny, which Lionsgate releases in 2,700 North American locations. It kicked off with $700,000 from Thursday previews, with the film tracking in the high-single-digit range. MadRiver Pictures and Punch Palace Productions produced the project that carries an $18 million production budget.

Director Jean-François Richet’s feature stars Statham as a former Marine who sets out to prove his innocence after getting framed for murder. It holds a 49 percent approval score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and follows Statham’s Shelter having opened to $5.5 million domestically earlier this year for Black Bear.

Set to win its fourth consecutive frame is the bonafide juggernaut that is Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink. Having recently set the record as the fastest movie to hit $800 million domestically, director Destin Daniel Cretton‘s feature is expected to surpass 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home as the No. 3 highest-grossing film ever in North America.

Also joining the box office fray this weekend are the Andrew Garfield-led The Magic Faraway Tree and Spa Weekend, starring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Anna Faris.
