Dolly Parton, the rhinestone-clad country music superstar whose songs, philanthropy and larger-than-life personality made her one of America’s most beloved entertainers, has died at age 80, according to an announcement from her family.

The singer-songwriter spent more than six decades transforming country music, but her impact extended well beyond Tennessee, leaving a lasting mark on California through Hollywood, literacy programs and a beloved home tucked away in the Santa Ynez Valley.

A Tennessee legend with a California footprint

Though Parton was synonymous with the Smoky Mountains, she maintained a unique connection to California that stretched from Los Angeles to Solvang.

For a decade, Parton owned a distinctive property in the Danish-style Santa Barbara County town of Solvang, purchasing the home in 2004 and holding it until 2014. The colorful compound became something of a local curiosity, reflecting the singer’s playful personality. Among its most famous features was Parton’s personal “wig room,” complete with a vanity and oversized mirror. A stained-glass window bearing her name and butterfly motif still greets visitors at the front entrance.

The property, which returned to the market earlier this year, remains one of the more unusual celebrity homes on California’s Central Coast. Local accounts suggested Parton was drawn to the residence because it reminded her of her grandmother’s home, while others viewed it as a quiet retreat from the spotlight of her music and film career.

Today, the Solvang home stands as a tangible reminder that one of America’s most recognizable entertainers once found comfort among the vineyards, windmills and rolling hills of the Santa Ynez Valley.

In addition to her Solvang home, Parton had a property in Idyllwild, a mountain town high above Palm Springs. The 1,800-square-foot cabin at 25300 Pine Crest Ave. went on the market in March 2025 for $768,000.

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Parton purchased the property, which has a guitar-shaped toilet, for $235,000 in June 2000.

Hollywood helped make Dolly Parton a household name

Parton’s California story was also shaped by Hollywood.

While she first conquered country radio with hits including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” she cemented her crossover appeal through films produced and celebrated in California’s entertainment industry.

Her breakout movie role came in 1980’s “9 to 5” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. She later starred in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “Steel Magnolias,” becoming one of the few country artists to achieve sustained success in both music and film.

California awarded some of Parton’s highest honors. She earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Across her career, she won 11 Grammy Awards, an Emmy and numerous industry accolades while maintaining a reputation for humility, wit and relentless work ethic.

Her songwriting legacy was equally unmatched. Parton scored 25 No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, more than any other female country artist, and remained relevant across generations through collaborations that ranged from Kenny Rogers and Linda Ronstadt to Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus.

Millions of California children benefited from her generosity

Perhaps Parton’s most enduring California contribution came through literacy.

Her Imagination Library, which mails free books to young children each month, expanded dramatically across California in recent years. State leaders partnered with Parton’s foundation to bring the program statewide, eventually opening eligibility to children in all 58 counties and making California the first state to offer a fully bilingual English-Spanish option.

The program aligned closely with Parton’s belief that reading could transform lives. Since launching in 1995, Imagination Library has distributed hundreds of millions of books worldwide, reaching countless California families.

Gov. Gavin Newsom previously praised Parton’s commitment to children’s literacy, calling the program a way to broaden opportunities for young Californians and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Dolly Parton built a career on authenticity

Born in 1946 in rural Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most successful entertainers in American history.

She wrote more than 3,000 songs, launched the Dollywood theme park empire, earned Academy Award nominations and built a business portfolio that stretched far beyond music.

Yet fans often connected just as strongly with her generosity as her talent. Parton funded scholarships, disaster relief efforts and medical research, including a widely noted donation that supported key COVID-19 vaccine research. In 2025, she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of her charitable work.

Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, died in 2025. Parton often described him as her greatest supporter and inspiration.

Survivors and memorial arrangements were not immediately announced.

Stars react to news of Dolly Parton’s passing

Shortly after the news of Parton’s passing, many people ranging from fans to politicians, celebrities and icons of the entertainment industry shared their heartbreak about her death.

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom called Parton “a phenomenal talent” and acknowledged that she “never forgot where she came from,” even as she became one of the country’s most beloved singers and songwriters, as well as one of the best-selling female country artists.

“Dolly Parton was larger than life,” Newsom wrote a social media post about Parton.

“She cared deeply about early literacy and spreading a love of reading to millions of children around the world — including tens of thousands right here in California. The world will be less sparkly without Dolly, but the joy she brought us and the stories she shared will shine on for generations.”

Icons of the industry: the Muppets, who shared the screen time with Parton on multiple occasions, offered a solemn tribute to Parton on social media.

“There will never be another quite like Dolly Parton. She was the ultimate singer, songwriter, actress, performer, and philanthropist. She filled the world with light and we are so grateful for every second we got to spend with her onstage and off,” the post reads.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis was another Hollywood icon who shared her love for Parton on social media.

“They say don’t meet your heroes. Her bravery to know that she was more than they thought she was and that she needed to break away and move on into new work and new possibilities led her to write I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, as her way of thanking and loving, but moving on. She is a great example for us all,” Curtis’s post reads.

People often joked that the one person who could transcend the political divide was Dolly Parton. And that can be seen on Aug. 25, as members from both sides of the aisle share their sadness regarding her death.

President Donald Trump ordered all U.S. flags to be lowered to half-staff to honor Parton’s life.

“This is a true loss for millions of people,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”

“Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”

Politicians like Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and Hillary Clinton, the former United States Secretary of State and a presidential opponent of Trump in the 2016 presidential election, both posted about their admiration for Parton.

Nancy Pelosi:

“Dolly Parton was a singular American icon whose extraordinary voice, joyful spirit, and generous heart brought light to millions and made America kinder and more hopeful,” Pelso’s post reads.

“Dolly was a committed philanthropist and a trailblazer who empowered women to find their own voices and be their authentic selves. May her legacy of beauty and artistry always be an inspiration.”

Hillary Clinton:

“Dolly Parton did all the good she could, for all the people she could, for as long as ever she could,” Clinton’s post reads.

“From her legendary songwriting to the Imagination Library—which sent 1 million books a month to children across the country—she was the best of America. Dolly, we’ll miss your great heart.”
