The success of Fallout on Prime Video caught Xbox’s attention and showed the company how important video game adaptations can be for film and television.
Xbox has already seen this potential with Fallout season 2 and A Minecraft Movie, but Asha Sharma now wants to take things one step further.
As one of the largest publishers in the Western gaming industry, Xbox wants to bring its iconic franchises to both film and television, and it is already negotiating with some of Hollywood’s biggest studios.
Netflix, Universal and Paramount Eye Xbox Franchises as Microsoft Seeks $300 Million Deal
According to a report from Puck News, Xbox is said to be offering a package containing some of its most famous licenses to Hollywood’s major studios, including IPs such as Halo, Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls, among others.
It has not been confirmed by Microsoft or the studios involved, but everything points to Halo, World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo and other iconic franchises being adapted for film and television, with the hope that they can achieve the success of Fallout and Minecraft.
Universal, Netflix and Paramount are the companies most interested in reaching a deal. Asha Sharma and the management team are considering whether to sell all the licenses in the package to a single studio or split them up so that the total cost does not become too high. According to Puck News, Xbox is asking for $300 million to reach a long-term agreement.
Xbox needs more money, and reaching a deal to adapt its franchises could provide the financial boost the company is looking for. However, the reported $300 million asking price is too high for at least one of the three interested companies, though it is not known which one.
It is worth noting that Halo already had a television series made by Paramount, but the franchise has not yet been adapted for the big screen. Warcraft, meanwhile, was made into a movie by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
There are also other franchises already in the process of making the jump, such as Gears of War, with a movie at Netflix, and Call of Duty, with a movie at Paramount. Meanwhile, Minecraft will receive an animated series on Netflix and a sequel to the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures adaptation. In addition, season 3 of Fallout is already in development.
For now, all that is known is that Xbox is looking for partners to carry out its goal, but it is not known whether it will reach one single agreement or several partnerships to adapt its franchises. As more information becomes available, we’ll make sure to let you guys know here at MP1st.
