Tenzing, a film directed by Jennifer Peedom telling the story of the first successful ascent of Everest, is set to premiere as the opening film of the 22nd Zurich Film Festival.
Shot at various scenic locations across Nepal, the film stars Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe and Genden Puntsok. According to Variety, the film will screen on September 24.
Produced by Apple Original Films, the movie’s European premiere will see Hiddleston, Dafoe and director Peedom walk Zurich’s green carpet. The film follows the story of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest.
Festival CEO Christian Jungen said this year’s festival theme is Dream Big, calling Tenzing a fitting opening film for it.
“This year’s Zurich Film Festival theme is ‘Dream Big.’ Our thrilling opening film ‘Tenzing’ matches it perfectly, because it shows how, when the dream is big enough, people can rise above their own limits,” he said.
Based on true events, Tenzing tells the story of Tenzing Norgay (played by Genden Puntsok), who, together with New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, achieved the first successful ascent of Everest in 1953.
The 22nd Zurich Film Festival will run from September 24 to October 4.
Meanwhile, the British Embassy in Kathmandu is organising a special screening of Tenzing in Kathmandu to raise funds for those affected by the Bhotekoshi floods. According to the embassy, proceeds from the screening will go to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.
