Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey has conquered dinosaurs on its impressive box office journey.

The feature adaptation of Homer’s epic poem has surpassed $1.677 billion globally to become Universal Pictures‘ highest-grossing release of all time, beating 2015’s Jurassic World for the top spot. With Nolan and Emma Thomas producing for Syncopy, The Odyssey has collected $601.2 million domestically for a global cume of $1.684 billion. It now stands at No. 12 on the all-time worldwide box office chart and holds the mark as the third-highest-grossing non-franchise movie ever.

“What Chris and Emma [Thomas] have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history,” NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley said in a statement. “A generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself.”

Starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, The Odyssey has enjoyed a historic run at the box office since its July 17 release. Focusing on the story of Odysseus (Damon) making his way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, it is expected to be a significant player in the forthcoming awards season.

The Odyssey gave Nolan his biggest global opening weekend ever, surpassing 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. It also notched the biggest debut frame domestically for Imax 70mm and delivered the studio’s highest-grossing opening for an R-rated title.

Nolan’s film continued to hit milestones throughout its run, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, in addition to Imax’s highest-grossing feature ever. The Odyssey is also the top-grossing title in the acclaimed filmmaker’s career.

The Odyssey helped Universal become the first studio to cross the $4 billion worldwide mark for 2026. By the end of the weekend, Universal will hit $4.92 billion globally for the year.
