Hollywood Ventures Group (HVG), Canadian film finance and production outfit Big Picture Cinema Group, and Morocco’s Pink Sheep Productions are teaming up to bring bestselling Moroccan crime thriller “The Final Bet” to the big screen.

The acclaimed Casablanca-set thriller by Moroccan author and award-winning screenwriter Abdelilah Hamdouchi was first published in 2001. It is touted as the first Arabic detective novel to be translated into English.

Set in Casablanca, “The Final Bet” is “a high-stakes psychological thriller following a young man framed for the murder of his wealthy wife. As he fights to prove his innocence, he becomes caught in a web of systemic corruption, romance and judicial intrigue,” according to the provided synopsis.

“It is a great source of pride to see ‘The Final Bet’ move from the page to the screen,” Hamdouchi said in a statement.

“A novel lives through language and imagination, and cinema gives its characters, tensions and story an entirely new dimension through image, performance and sound,” the Moroccan author added. “To see this Moroccan story take on a new life as a feature film is deeply meaningful to me, both personally and as a writer,” he added.

Hollywood Ventures Group co-founder Glenn Gainor commented: “While this is a work of fiction, it speaks to a period of profound legal and social change in Morocco and to questions of justice that transcend borders. We’re incredibly proud to help bring Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s story to the screen.”

The producers are shopping the project at the Toronto film market and targeting a 2027 start of production date.

Jayce Barreiro, president and head of production at Big Picture Cinema Group, said: “What sold me on ‘The Final Bet’ wasn’t just the plot, it’s that you can feel the heat and pressure of Casablanca on every page. That specificity is rare,” he added. “And it’s exactly what makes a thriller stick with you instead of just moving past you.”

For Pink Sheep Productions’ Seloua El Gouni and Taha Benghalem, bringing ‘The Final Bet’ to the screen “is both a privilege and a responsibility,” they jointly said in the statement. “Abdelilah Hamdouchi is one of Morocco’s great contemporary storytellers,” they went on, “And his novel carries the intelligence, tension and cultural specificity to become a truly international film without losing what makes it distinctly Moroccan.”

Gainor is adapting the novel for the screen with Taha Benghalem, who will also produce alongside Seloua El Gouni for Pink Sheep Productions and Nelly Kim for Hollywood Ventures Group. Jayce Barreiro, Graem Luis and Michael Aleong of Big Picture Cinema Group are co-financing and producing the project. HVG’s Nabeel Laher, Kiran Kaur and Nicholas Wittcoff will executive produce.
