Delighting audiences in 1992, family classic Beethoven was an instant hit with its chaotic St. Bernard and the lovable Newton family, who adopted him.

More than 30 years have passed since the pet bounded onto the screen, and the film remains a nostalgic comfort watch for people across the globe.

After finding fame as part of the project, the actors behind the Newton family have each followed very different paths since they first arrived in Hollywood.

While some stayed in the industry, others stepped away from the spotlight entirely. Let’s take a closer look at what happened to the cast of Beethoven and where they have ended up almost half a century since their beloved debut…

Charles Grodin – George Newton

Taking on the role as the patriarch of the family, Charles was the naysayer of the clan when it came to adopting Beethoven but was quickly won over by the dog’s undeniable charm.

As an actor, he was known for his dry comedic style. He took a hiatus from acting in the mid-90s to become a political commentator before returning to the industry and starring in Louie and Law and Order: SVU.

Charles died in 2021 at 86 years of age after a battle with bone marrow cancer.

One of the more famous faces to emerge from the film, Bonnie Hunt, was raised in Chicago and enjoyed a long, illustrious career in showbiz.

Aside from Beethoven, she starred in movies like Jumanji and Cheaper By the Dozen, as well as hosting her own TV show, The Bonnie Hunt Show.

As of 2026, the star continues to work in entertainment, recently writing, directing, and executive producing the Apple TV+ series Amber Brown and appearing in the 2024 film Red One.

Playing the eldest daughter of the Newton family, Nicholle went on to enjoy more success after starring in the family comedy.

She continued acting and landed a long-running role as Maggie Sheffield on the sitcom The Nanny.

Nicholle currently lives in Los Angeles and has appeared in other projects, including Prisoner of Love, Gotham and Masters of Sex.

Christopher played the middle child and only boy in the Newton family in the 90s and continued acting for a brief time after the film’s release.

He initially starred in Step by Step but subsequently left the industry to become a teacher and live a life away from the spotlight.

The former star teaches US history at Downey High School in Downey, California, and is an adjunct professor of political science at Biola University in La Mirada, California.

She is pursuing a private life away from the limelight, and little is known about her whereabouts in her later years.

The famous actor played one half of the villainous henchmen in the film and has gone on to have an extremely successful career in film and television.

Married to actress Emily Blunt’s sister, Felicity, Stanley has most recently starred in The Devil Wears Prada 2, among many other projects that include The Lovely Bones, The Hunger Games and Conclave.

Outside of the film, he also starred in The Love Bug and That Darn Cat and became synonymous with Disney projects.

He died on 1 September 2015, at age 84, in Los Angeles due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
