The key to an insanely high pre-Christmas Spotify streaming bump? Snagging a feature on HBO Max-Crave’s Heated Rivalry, apparently.
T.A.T.u’s 2002 anthem “All The Things She Said” served as one of the best needle drops on television this year, soundtracking a pivotal moment in episode four of Heated Rivalry. The track, along with British artist Harrison’s remix, have seen massive streaming bumps since the episode aired.
According to data Spotify shared with The Hollywood Reporter last week, T.A.T.u’s streams on the platform have more than doubled, rising 135 percent in the U.S. since the fourth episode’s release Dec. 12. “All The Things She Said” currently has over 700 million total streams on Spotify. Discoveries of the song have jumped by 200 percent, Spotify said, with Gen Z accounting for 60 percent of those discoveries.
In new data released this week, Harrison’s remix of the song saw a jaw-dropping 139,000 percent increase in global streams on the platform since Dec. 12. The singer commented “Thank you everyone” on a recent Spotify post sharing the news.
Wolf Parade, whose song “I’ll Believe in Anything” served as the unofficial soundtrack for the season’s secondary couple Scott Hunter (François Arnaud) and Kip Grady (Robbie G.K.), has also seen a huge bump from show. The track was used in arguably the show’s strongest and most emotional moment, where Arnaud’s character becomes the first professional hockey player to come out as gay by kissing G.K.’s Kip on the ice after winning the championship. Cue the tears, and apparently the streams, as Spotify says the song’s global listens have jumped 2,650 percent since the episode’s release Dec. 19.
Aside from the songs, Spotify says the audiobook for Heated Rivalry, the Rachel Reid novel the show is based on, has also seen a massive increase in the lead-up and airing of the Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie-fronted series. Audiobook streams on Spotify of the book have increased by 1,500 percent in the last 10 weeks. The book is the second in a string of gay hockey romance novels by Reid that are all set in the same universe.
The show, created for television by Letterkenny alum Jacob Tierney, centers around a fictional hockey universe. Heated Rivalry focuses on two rival professional hockey players — Canada-born Shane Hollander (Williams) of the fictitious Montreal Metros and Russia-born Ilya Rozanov (Storrie) of the fictitious Boston Raiders — as they navigate a years-long secret fling. Tierney and Brendan Brady are showrunning the series from Accent Aigu Entertainment.
Heated Rivalry was already gaining traction online ahead of its premiere, but it’s become increasingly popular in the nearly four weeks since its debut. The show’s sixth episode, the last of its first season, will air on Crave and HBO Max Friday (Dec. 26). It premieres on Sky in the U.K. and Ireland on Jan. 10.
