Noah Wyle missed roles in Saving Private Ryan and Good Night, and Good Luck due to ER commitments, but has no regrets.

Noah Wyle missed Saving Private Ryan, Good Night, Good Luck roles

Landing a role in a blockbuster is often a dream for actors, but sometimes scheduling gets in the way. For Noah Wyle, one of television’s biggest hits meant saying no to a few unforgettable Hollywood opportunities.

Speaking on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, The Pitt star revealed that his long-running commitment to ER prevented him from taking up roles in two acclaimed films — Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck.

When asked if there were any roles he wished he had taken, Wyle admitted there were quite a few.

“Yeah, tons. Happens all the time. We talked about a couple of them, actually. ‘Good Night, and Good Luck,’ George [Clooney] offered me a part in that. I couldnt’ get out of ‘ER’ to do it. I was offered the part of Private Ryan in ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ couldn’t get out of ‘ER’ to do it.”

Even though he missed those opportunities, Wyle said he has no regrets. Looking back, he believes the actors who eventually landed the parts delivered performances that were impossible to top.

“I almost am glad that I didn’t do them, because, you know, those guys made those parts,” he said. “Matt Damon was Private Ryan. There were two. I got offered the part of Upham, which was Jeremy Davies’ part, and he was so phenomenal in that I couldn’t imagine doing anything close to what he did.”

Wyle is now enjoying success with another medical drama, The Pitt. The HBO Max series completed its second season in April, and production on Season 3 officially began in June. The upcoming season will unfold over a single day set in November.

The series has also earned major recognition during awards season. The Pitt won five Emmy Awards in 2025, including Outstanding Drama Series, while Wyle received the award for Lead Actor in a Drama for playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
