Rob Liefeld is returning to the world of Avengelyne. The comic book creator is launching a new take on the ‘90s hero, with Image Comics releasing a series in October. Liefeld will write Avengelyne, with Daniel Maine serving as the main artist and Doni Cahyono as the colorist.

Bowing in 1995, the original Avengelyne centered on a fallen angel cast to Earth. She was entrusted to find and protect The One, a person who is the key to guarding humanity from demons and other monsters. Liefeld co-created the character with Cathy Christian and Tony Lobito, and it became Image’s top-selling title for several years.

A first look at the new comic will be available later this month at San Diego Comic-Con, and comes as Avengelyne is finding new life beyond the comic book pages.

Olivia Wilde is attached to direct an Avengelyne feature for Warner Bros., with  Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap producing, along with Deadpool producer Simon Kinberg. Tony McNamara, who earned Oscar nominations for writing Poor Things and The Favourite, is penning the script.

“I have seen Olivia Wild’s look books for Avengelyne. She started cooking on this early,” says Liefeld, who notes Wild’s latest feature The Invite is earning a strong reaction among audiences.

Liefeld also quips that writing his new comic was a challenge, because he’s not used to penning a book after seeing what an Academy Award nominated writer like McNamara is doing with the project. But he believes he found his way.

“My entry point here in the comic book is somewhat different than the entry point to the cinematic version, but they kind of arrive at the same place,” he says.

Read on for a first-look at the new book.
