The film earned critical acclaim and commercial success while introducing audiences to Milly Alcock‘s standout debut as Supergirl. Alcock is stepping into the spotlight with her first solo outing, Supergirl, arriving in theaters on June 26. Following one of DC’s strongest films in years is no easy task, but director Craig Gillespie‘s film is on track to build on that momentum. Here are the 5 biggest reasons why we think Supergirl will be a smashing success!

1The Story

Supergirl draws heavily from Tom King‘s acclaimed graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a story that redefined Supergirl for a new generation. The comic follows Supergirl and a young alien girl on a galaxy-spanning quest for revenge while she searches for a purpose beyond being Superman’s cousin. It’s a refreshing departure from traditional superhero stories, with emotional depth and stunning visuals that make it a perfect fit for the big screen.

2Milly Alcock

In Superman, Alcock establishes a version of Supergirl that perfectly contrasts David Corenswet’s Superman. Supergirl appeared rebellious and messy but still had an undeniable charisma. After her performance in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel, “House of the Dragon”, it is clear that Alcock has the screen presence necessary to portray a complex heroine like Supergirl. As first reactions begin to come out, our confidence in Alcock only grows because she is being endlessly praised for her powerful yet relatable interpretation of Supergirl.

3Lobo

Although Jason Momoa famously played Aquaman, he has made it abundantly clear that his dream DC role was Lobo. The unkillable, cigar-smoking bounty hunter is one of DC’s most outrageous characters, and Momoa looks like a perfect fit. If the trailers are any indication, Lobo is shaping up to be one of the film’s biggest scene-stealers. According to early reviews, Momoa was born to play Lobo as he fully embodies the chaotic charm of the character.

4Craig Gillespie

It takes a very specific type of director to fully capture the essence of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Supergirl isn’t acting like a stereotype for a majority of the story, and the complexity of her character must be executed perfectly. Films like I, Tonya and Cruella showcase Gillespie’s energetic visual style and ability to portray complex female characters, making him an ideal choice for Supergirl’s cinematic debut.

5Krypto

Krypto the Super Dog captured audiences’ hearts in Superman, but it became clear that he wasn’t Superman’s dog. At the end of the film, Krypto lovingly tackles Supergirl, which hints to an adorable companionship that we cannot wait to see more of. If nothing else, we are eager to see Krypto as a puppy.

With early reviews starting to roll in, Supergirl is being aesthetically compared to the Academy Award-winning Mad Max: Fury Road while also being praised for a poignant emotional core. An outstanding cast, exciting new characters, and remarkable source material indicate that Supergirl has all of the ingredients to continue the DCU’s impressive start. Whether you’re excited for Milly Alcock, Jason Momoa’s Lobo, or simply more Krypto, be sure to catch Supergirl in theaters on June 26!
