This weekend’s biggest viral hits did not come from a legacy franchise or a studio tentpole. They came from two filmmakers who built their audiences on the internet and then walked straight into Hollywood with them.
Nobody hands out awards for timing in this business, but if they did, Kane Parsons and Curry Barker would both be walking up to the podium right now. Two filmmakers. Both built their followings online. Both showing up in the same weekend box office report and both winning in ways that are genuinely hard to explain away as a coincidence. Something is happening here and this weekend made it impossible to look past.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Parsons is on track for one of the biggest A24 openings ever with Backrooms. The number being thrown around is at least $80 million, with some tracking suggesting it could push to $90 million before the final tally comes in Sunday night. That is a remarkable number for any film. For a 20-year-old making his theatrical debut, it is almost hard to process.
Kane Parsons Turns a Viral Breakout Hit Into Box Office History
Friday alone brought in an estimated $38 million for Backrooms including previews. That kind of opening day points to a very big weekend.
The film centers on a struggling architect, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stumbles onto a seemingly infinite maze of rooms buried inside the furniture store he runs. The premise started as an internet sensation with a devoted online following, caught Hollywood’s attention, and landed at A24. Now it is sitting at the top of the weekend box office chart.
The studio has always had strong critical credibility. What Backrooms adds to that is proof that A24 can generate genuine mainstream commercial momentum without compromising the kind of filmmaking it built its reputation on.
Curry Barker’s Obsession Is One of the Year’s Biggest Breakout Successes
Here is the thing about Obsession. The film cost $750,000 to make. It is expected to earn around $28.5 million this weekend. And that number is actually higher than last weekend’s number.
Most films lose audience in week two. Obsession grew by roughly 39 percent instead. The film has already crossed $100 million globally and quietly become the biggest release in Focus Features history. Curry Barker went from unknown filmmaker to the most closely watched new director in Hollywood in a matter of weeks.
Nobody in the industry is pretending they fully saw this coming. Everyone is paying very close attention to what Barker does next.
Where The Mandalorian and Grogu Fits In
The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to land in third place this weekend with around $24 million, pushing its worldwide total to approximately $171 million. For Disney that number only tells part of the story. Star Wars moves merchandise, sells theme park tickets, drives streaming subscriptions, and generates licensing revenue that never shows up in a box office column.
Even so, finishing third behind two online sensations turned theatrical hits is a notable moment. Audience attention moves fast when something new captures it, and this weekend is a pretty clear illustration of that.
The Expected Top Five This Weekend
Based on current industry estimates the weekend rankings look like this:
Backrooms Obsession The Mandalorian and Grogu Michael The Breadwinner
Other New Releases Worth Watching This Weekend
The Breadwinner introduces comedian Nate Bargatze to feature film audiences for the first time. He stars opposite Mandy Moore in a comedy about a husband thrown into managing the household and kids solo while his wife is away. Opening weekend projections sit around $7.5 million, which puts it in range for a Top 5 finish. Critical response has been mixed but regular audiences have been considerably kinder.
Also debuting this weekend is Pressure, a World War II drama from Focus Features with Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott leading the cast. The film is projected to finish just outside the Top 5.
Official Numbers Come Tomorrow
Everything here is still estimate territory. Studios release confirmed totals on Monday and the final numbers sometimes move around more than expected.
The story this weekend is already written though. Viral hits are arriving in Hollywood now, built from digital sensations that brought massive audiences straight into movie theaters. Whether Backrooms lands at $80 million or clears $90 million, Kane Parsons has already made his point in the loudest possible way.
The official weekend box office totals drop tomorrow. Check back then for the final confirmed standings.
