Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has received an overwhelmingly positive response from early viewers, with many calling it the filmmaker’s “crowning achievement” and one of the greatest films ever made. While most first reactions praised the film’s scale and ambition, a few viewers offered a more mixed response, adding to the online conversation ahead of its theatrical release.

Following early screenings, social media was flooded with reactions, with many hailing Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic as a cinematic triumph.

One wrote, “I HAVE SEEN The Odyssey, Not even the gods can prepare you for this film. Groundbreaking film, an experience I’ll never forget (sic).”

Another wrote, “THE ODYSSEY is Christopher Nolan’s crowning achievement. He fully commits to the myth and it’s unlike anything he has made before. This movie is strange, stunningly beautiful, and the cast is doing the best work of their careers. Do whatever you can to see it in IMAX 70MM (sic).”

Not all reactions were glowing, however. One viewer wrote, “#TheOdyssey I finished watching The Odyssey and it felt extremely dull and drawn out. Performances were great but Tom Holland was easily the weakest for me. I expected this to be a role where he could show his range but it didn’t work. Not much else to say, just disappointed (sic).”

Another reaction read, “I saw THE ODYSSEY last week…It’s Christopher Nolan’s most straightforward movie ever – and also maybe his most impressive. Both the epic scale and attention to detail are absolutely stunning. The closest comparison I can think of is Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (sic).”

One more viewer wrote, “The Odyssey is not only one of Nolan’s finest films (perhaps “the” finest), but also one of the best in the genre – and indeed, one of the greatest films in the history of cinema. You have to see it to believe it (sic).”

The film is set to release in theatres on July 17. Ahead of its release, Nolan and the ensemble cast have been promoting The Odyssey through a global press tour. After attending the London premiere on Monday, the team is scheduled to visit Paris, Mumbai, New York, Beijing and Seoul.

The Odyssey was shot across multiple international locations, including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland and Scotland. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema also used newly developed lightweight IMAX cameras, designed to overcome the format’s traditional size and logistical limitations.

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie, among others.

Produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan under Syncopy, The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theatres on July 17, 2026.
