There are artists who spend decades trying to outrun their biggest hit, but Rick Springfield has taken the opposite approach. He embraces it, has fun with it, and then reminds audiences that there’s much more to his catalog than the song that dominated radio in 1981.

That was the story Saturday night at the Events Center at Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, West Virginia. Springfield drew from nearly five decades of music in a tight, energetic set that never felt like a nostalgia exercise. Instead, it played like a reunion among old friends, filled with soaring guitar riffs, plenty of humor, and countless moments where the audience eagerly sang along.

The crowd reflected Springfield’s remarkable staying power. Fans who grew up with Working Class Dog stood shoulder to shoulder on July 18 with younger concertgoers who discovered him through streaming services, television appearances, or simply because great pop-rock songs have a way of finding new audiences. By the time the lights went down, everyone seemed ready for the same thing: 90 minutes of straightforward rock and roll.

Springfield wasted no time getting the evening moving, opening with a spirited cover of The Easybeats’ “I’ll Make You Happy.” It was an unexpected choice that immediately signaled this wouldn’t be a greatest-hits show on autopilot.

From the opening chords, Springfield’s band sounded razor-sharp, giving the veteran performer plenty of room to roam the stage with the restless energy that has become one of his trademarks.

“Affair of the Heart” followed, drawing one of the night’s first massive singalongs. The song has quietly become a live staple, and hearing hundreds of voices join in proved it has lost none of its power.

Springfield then reached back for “Kristina” before launching into “I’ve Done Everything for You.” The Sammy Hagar-penned rocker still packs plenty of punch, and Springfield attacked it with the enthusiasm of someone performing it for the first time rather than the thousandth.

One of the evening’s greatest strengths was Springfield’s willingness to reward longtime fans with more than just the obvious radio favorites.

Songs such as “Venus in Overdrive,” “I Get Excited,” “Our Ship’s Sinking,” and “World Start Turning” gave the middle of the set genuine personality. Rather than serving as filler between the hits, each added another layer to Springfield’s performance, reminding the audience that he has always been a songwriter first and a pop icon second.

Many legacy artists lean almost exclusively on familiar singles, worried that deeper cuts might slow the momentum. Springfield clearly trusts both his catalog and his audience enough to take a different approach.

That confidence paid off. The crowd remained fully engaged throughout, responding to every song with genuine enthusiasm rather than polite applause.

Of course, every Rick Springfield concert reaches the point where the biggest favorites begin arriving in rapid succession.

“Don’t Talk to Strangers” immediately kicked the room into another gear. Springfield’s voice still carried the urgency that made the song a hit decades ago, while the band gave it a fuller, heavier sound that suited the live setting perfectly.

A spirited cover of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” fit naturally into the set, allowing the band to stretch out before Springfield steered things back toward his own catalog.

“Love Is Alright Tonite” and “State of the Heart” kept the momentum rolling, each greeted like an old friend. Then came “The Voodoo House,” a reminder that Springfield has always enjoyed exploring darker shades beneath his polished pop hooks. It provided a welcome contrast before “Love Somebody” and “Human Touch” brought the main set to an energetic close.

Few in the audience headed for the exits after “Human Touch.” Everyone knew what was coming.

Following a brief pause, Springfield returned with the unmistakable opening riff of “Jessie’s Girl.” Some songs belong to an artist; others become part of popular culture. This one has managed to do both.

The audience instantly became the night’s loudest backing choir, singing every word while Springfield happily ceded portions of the chorus to the crowd. It was one of those concert moments that somehow never loses its magic, no matter how many times you’ve experienced it.

Watching several generations sing along to the same song under the lights in Charles Town said everything about Springfield’s enduring appeal. He continues to write, tour, and perform with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely loves being onstage, and that energy spreads quickly through the room.

Throughout the evening, Springfield rarely stood still. Whether trading guitar licks with his band, joking with the audience between songs, or leaning into the front row to connect with fans who have followed him for decades, he remained fully engaged from start to finish.

On a warm July night in West Virginia, Springfield transformed the Events Center into one giant singalong powered by timeless songs, an outstanding band, and a performer who continues to prove that great rock and roll doesn’t come with an expiration date.
