Capes, scares and spaceships all shared the stage this year. The Critics Choice Association has revealed its winners for the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards, and the genre crowd made out well.
These awards celebrate movies and shows with especially passionate fan bases: superhero stories, action, horror, science fiction, fantasy. On the TV side, it came down to The Boys and Widow’s Bay. For film, the night belonged to Superman, Project Hail Mary, Obsession and The Furious.
The Boys wins Critics Choice awards across the board
Five nominations. Three wins at the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards. The Boys opened its account by taking Best Superhero Series, Limited Series or Made for TV Movie, and it wasn’t done there.
But Antony Starr was the real story. Homelander is just that kind of role. He grabbed Best Actor in a Superhero Series, Limited Series or Made for TV Movie and Best Villain in a Series, Limited Series or Made for TV Movie, bringing the show’s total to three. This show simply refuses to stop winning.
Widow’s Bay sweeps the horror television categories
Widow’s Bay did The Boys one better at the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards. It went undefeated, winning every single category it was nominated in: Best Horror Series, Limited Series or Made for TV Movie for the show, Best Actor in a Horror Series for Matthew Rhys, and Best Actress for Kate O’Flynn. Clean sweep.
Superman wins Best Superhero Movie at the Critics Choice Super Awards
Superman had a strong night at the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards. The film took Best Superhero Movie, and David Corenswet made it a double by winning Best Actor in a Superhero Movie for his performance as the Man of Steel.
The superhero field wasn’t done there. Milly Alcock won Best Actress in a Superhero Movie for Supergirl.
Project Hail Mary Wins Sci-Fi Awards At The 6th Critics Choice Super Awards
Science fiction belonged to Project Hail Mary on this night. The film won Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie, and Ryan Gosling doubled its haul with Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie. Rounding out the category, Emily Blunt took Best Actress for Disclosure Day.
Horror and action films earn major victories
Horror belonged to Obsession at the 6th Critics Choice Super Awards, pulling in two wins. Best Horror Movie went to the film, and Inde Navarrette earned Best Actress in a Horror Movie. Ralph Fiennes took Best Actor for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and Amy Madigan picked up Best Villain in a Movie for Weapons.
Action? That was The Furious territory. The film won Best Action Movie, with Xie Miao adding Best Actor in an Action Movie for a second trophy. Charlize Theron took Best Actress in an Action Movie for Apex.
The ceremony’s most adorable winner
Not every category played it straight, and thank goodness. The Critics Choice Super Awards set aside room for something different this year, which might just be the best part of the whole night. Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, stars in the IFC horror thriller Good Boy, and he walked away with the special Best Good Boy in a Horror Movie award.
Nobody can resist a scene stealing dog, not even the critics. Superhero showdowns, terrifying villains and sprawling sci-fi worlds dominated the rest of the night. But Indy walked away with something none of them did: the most memorable moment of the whole ceremony.
