Few Hollywood couples have enjoyed a moment quite like the one Tom Holland and Zendaya are having right now.
The pair appeared together in two of 2026’s biggest movies: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Brand New Day recorded the largest domestic opening in history, according to Forbes, while The Odyssey became another major global hit for Nolan. The films helped propel the North American box office to a record-breaking weekend when the latest Spider-Man movie opened in August.
The success cemented Holland and Zendaya’s status as Hollywood’s dominant power couple of the moment. But where do they rank among the greatest movie-star pairings of all time?
There is no definitive formula for measuring a Hollywood power couple, and any such ranking is subjective. To compile this list, Newsweek considered five principal factors: each performer’s individual stardom; the couple’s combined box-office power; awards and critical recognition; their influence on popular culture and the media; and the longevity and lasting significance of both their careers and relationship.
The result is Newsweek’s ranking of the 10 greatest Hollywood power couples of all time.
10. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together since 1983, when they reconnected while making the 1984 film Swing Shift. They later appeared together in Overboard and The Christmas Chronicles, as well as its sequel.
Hawn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Cactus Flower and received a Best Actress nomination for Private Benjamin. Russell’s credits include Escape From New York, The Thing, Tombstone, Miracle and several installments of the Fast & Furious franchise.
The couple has never married. Hawn has said they chose to retain their independence and continue choosing to remain together, according to People. Their relationship, now spanning more than four decades, is among the longest-running partnerships between two major Hollywood stars.
9. Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz
Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz first worked together in the 1992 Spanish film Jamón Jamón. They began a relationship years later and married in 2010.
Both had established international careers before becoming regular Hollywood leads. Bardem won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men, while Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
In 2022, they became one of a few married couples nominated for acting Oscars in the same year. Bardem was nominated for Being the Ricardos, and Cruz was recognized for Parallel Mothers. It was the fourth acting nomination for each of them.
Their ranking is based primarily on their combined awards record, international reach and sustained careers in both Spanish- and English-language cinema.
8. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively met while making the 2011 film Green Lantern and married the following year.
Reynolds’ biggest commercial success has come through the Deadpool franchise. Lively’s film credits include The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Town, The Age of Adaline, A Simple Favor and It Ends With Us.
The couple simultaneously occupied the top two places at the North American box office in August 2024. Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine finished first as it passed $1 billion worldwide, while Lively’s It Ends With Us opened in second place with $50 million domestically.
Their combined film earnings, business interests and large social media profiles have made them one of Hollywood’s most prominent contemporary couples.
7. Bruce Willis and Demi Moore
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore married in 1987 and divorced in 2000. They have three daughters together and remained close after the end of their marriage.
During their relationship, Willis led films including Die Hard, Die Hard 2, The Last Boy Scout, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, Armageddon and The Sixth Sense. Moore starred in Ghost, A Few Good Men, Indecent Proposal, Disclosure and G.I. Jane.
Their marriage therefore coincided with the most commercially successful periods of both careers. Each was regularly cast as the lead in major studio productions, giving the couple an unusually high level of combined box-office power during the 1990s.
Moore has continued to take part in Willis’ family life since their divorce, including after his diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia was announced.
6. Tom Holland and Zendaya
Tom Holland and Zendaya first appeared together in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. They returned for Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Outside the franchise, Zendaya starred in the Dune films and in Challengers, while Holland led the video game adaptation Uncharted. Zendaya has also won two Emmy Awards for her performance in HBO’s Euphoria.
This, combined with their current commercial success this year, places them sixth, although their long-term standing will depend on the future course of their careers.
5. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall met while making To Have and Have Not, Bacall’s first film, which was released in 1944. They married in 1945 and remained together until Bogart’s death in 1957.
The couple made three other films together: The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. The Academy has described their relationship as a “real-life love story” that made international headlines while noting that their marriage did not diminish their on-screen chemistry.
Bogart won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The African Queen, while Bacall continued working in film and theater for decades and received an honorary Oscar in 2009.
Their four collaborations and continued association with Hollywood’s Golden Age place them in fifth place.
4. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez began a relationship after working together on the 2003 film Gigli. Their engagement and the extensive coverage surrounding it led to the nickname Bennifer, one of the earliest celebrity portmanteaus to receive widespread use.
They ended their first engagement in 2004, reunited in 2021, and married in 2022. Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, and a judge finalized the divorce in 2025.
Affleck has won Academy Awards for co-writing Good Will Hunting and producing best picture winner Argo. Lopez has led films including Selena, Out of Sight, The Wedding Planner, Maid in Manhattan and Hustlers while maintaining a parallel music career.
Their high position reflects the scale and duration of public interest in their relationship, including renewed coverage following their reunion nearly two decades later.
3. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones met in 1998 and married in November 2000. They have two children together.
Douglas won an Academy Award as a producer of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and another for his performance in Wall Street. His other major films include Romancing the Stone, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct and Traffic.
Zeta-Jones became an international star through The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment and Traffic. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Chicago.
The couple briefly separated in 2013 before reconciling. Their combined awards record, box-office success and marriage of more than 25 years place them third.
2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie worked together on the 2005 action comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Their relationship became public following the film’s release, and they married in 2014 after nearly a decade together.
Both were established leading actors. Jolie had won an Academy Award for Girl, Interrupted, while Pitt later won an acting Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and a best picture Oscar as a producer of 12 Years a Slave.
Their public profile also extended beyond film. Jolie worked with the United Nations refugee agency for more than 20 years, serving as a goodwill ambassador and special envoy. The couple also established the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which funded humanitarian, health and conservation initiatives.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016. Their prominence across film, humanitarian work and international media coverage places them second.
1. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met while filming Cleopatra, which was released in 1963. They married in 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975 and divorced for a second time in 1976.
They appeared in 11 films together, including The V.I.P.s, The Sandpiper, The Taming of the Shrew and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Taylor won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for Butterfield 8 and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Burton received seven acting nominations but did not win. Both were nominated for their performances in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, with Taylor winning.
Their shared filmography, individual awards records and the international attention generated by their two marriages place Taylor and Burton at No. 1.
