Spider-Man continues to make life difficult for every movie trying to knock it out of first place.
Another weekend brought fresh competition to theaters, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day was still sitting comfortably on top after Friday’s numbers came in. Two newcomers had a shot at shaking things up, including The End of Oak Street with Anne Hathaway and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. Neither could catch Peter Parker.
According to Variety, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned another $19 million domestically on Friday as it headed into its third weekend. The Marvel and Sony movie is now projected to finish the weekend with roughly $67 million. If it gets there, its North American total will climb to around $783 million.
Three weekends at No. 1 is impressive enough. Doing it while several big releases are fighting for the same moviegoing audience makes the run stand out even more.
Spider-Man Continues On Top As The End of Oak Street Opens In Second
The biggest new live-action movie of the weekend couldn’t catch Spider-Man, but it did grab second place. The End of Oak Street earned $8.1 million Friday. Current weekend box office estimates have the Warner Bros. sci-fi thriller finishing with approximately $18.7 million.
That’s not a huge opening for a movie that reportedly cost more than $80 million to make, which means the next few weekends could be especially important. There are some reasons to think it could hang around.
David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker behind It Follows, wrote and directed the movie. The premise starts with an ordinary suburban family and then throws ordinary completely out the window. Their neighborhood is suddenly transported into prehistoric times, leaving them surrounded by a world that clearly wasn’t built for them.

PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie Isn’t Far Behind
Apparently, prehistoric trouble is a theme at the weekend box office. PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie opened just behind The End of Oak Street, earning $7.35 million.
Paramount’s animated family movie is projected to bring in around $20 million by the end of the weekend. That would actually put its full weekend fairly close to PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which opened with $22 million before eventually reaching $205 million during its theatrical run.
Family movies can be a little tricky to judge from one Friday. They don’t always need a massive opening night if parents and kids keep showing up over the following weeks. So while Spider-Man continues to lead, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie still has plenty of time to find its audience.
The Odyssey Just Keeps Going
One of the more interesting stories on the box office chart isn’t a new release at all. While Spider-Man remains on top, The Odyssey is proving it has plenty of staying power of its own.
Now in its fifth weekend, Christopher Nolan’s epic added another $6.5 million Friday and is expected to earn roughly $23 million over the weekend. That would push its North American total to approximately $504 million. Crossing the $500 million domestic mark this deep into its run is another major milestone, especially as Spider-Man continues to lead the weekend box office.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus alongside a huge ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. There’s also a fun little wrinkle to this weekend’s numbers. Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway each have more than one movie competing near the top of the box office at the same time.
Spider-Man stays ahead for now, but The Odyssey isn’t giving up its place among the weekend’s biggest movies either. That’s not something you see every weekend.
Spider-Man Continues As Katseye: Wild Hearts Cracks The Top Five
The fifth-place movie is playing on a much smaller scale, which makes its showing worth a look while Spider-Man remains firmly in control of the weekend box office. Katseye: Wild Hearts earned an estimated $2.2 million Friday from only 724 theaters. The documentary, which takes fans behind the scenes with the global girl group Katseye, is expected to finish the weekend with around $3.8 million.
That number obviously isn’t competing with the giant studio movies above it, but neither is its theater count. Reaching the top five with fewer than 1,000 locations gives the documentary its own box office story, even as Spider-Man stays on top of the overall rankings. For everybody else, Spider-Man remains the target.
New movies arrived, dinosaurs invaded two very different releases and The Odyssey crossed another major milestone. Yet as the weekend box office race continued, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was still the movie everyone else was chasing. Spider-Man continues to hold the advantage, and so far, none of the weekend’s competition has been able to change that.
