When it comes to first impressions, Lucia crushes. Your eyes fall on giant tulip structures soaring towards the ceiling and pod-shaped booths resembling miniature Hollywood Bowl shells. Gorgeous Sezane-wearing couples flank the bar while snacking on flaky wagyu beef patties and sipping okra martinis. You can’t not gawk.

But there’s more to this fancy Afro-Caribbean spot on Fairfax than hot people and an otherworldly design. There’s also decadent, spice-enriched food, classic cocktails with interesting twists, and a waitstaff that gives every person who walks through the door the attention of a Grammy winner—elements that prove Lucia is more than just looks. It’s also a helluva place to have a glammed-out dinner.

Lucia does have its clubby touches. There’s a DJ booth by the kitchen and the dress code forbidding shorts or baseball caps is actually enforced. The place is one champagne bottle and a sparkler away from being a full-on clubstaurant. That said, the restaurant parts are equally memorable: garlicky fufu mash whipped with coconut milk, margaritas made with jerk-spiced agave, or a show-stopping trini-chinese chicken that’ll have your entire table gnawing on bones with complete disregard for their new, conversation-stealing top.

The updated menu (Lucia brought in a new chef at the end of 2025) is much stronger than the original one, and consistently nails its vibrant sauces, so prioritize dishes that feature a pool of something colorful on the plate (because it’s easier to forgive a just-too-sweet taramind caesar salad when you’re sopping up silky coconut butter with a thick piece of milk bread). Even after you’ve filled your camera roll with two dozen pictures of the bar—or shimmied in your seat all night to ’90s hip-hop—you’ll still find yourself discreetly maneuvering for another spoonful of peppa sauce jus.

Food Rundown

Cocktails

With a fun drink list featuring moscow mules dusted in masala or a smoky Tom Collins made with mezcal and Red Stripe, you could make a whole night out of the on-theme cocktails at Lucia. And since the bar is open until midnight (and 2am on weekends), it’s a great nightcap option in the area when you want something more than well drinks at Kibitz Room.

Wagyu Patties

These flaky fancied-up patties aren’t quite on the same level as the blockbuster ones at Bridgetown Roti, but as a delicious snack to pass around the table and get the night going, they’re a must. And the spicy mango pepper sauce on the side has a nice kick.

Rock Shrimp

Meals at Lucia skew heavy, so order this light, mariscos-esque appetizer to start. The shrimp are plump and sweet, and your whole table will be leaning in for the last spoonful of the tangy grapefruit broth underneath. You also get some salty taro chips for dipping, and if you ask nicely, your server will bring refills.

Tamarind Caesar

If you want some greens on your table, this is a decent salad. But the combination of tamarind and pickled mango is just too sweet. And that’s not the vibe for a caesar.

Fufu Mash

Thick, coconut-y, and goes well with any sauce that’s on the tip of your spoon. It’s a must-have side dish, and unless you want grumbles at your table, order one for every two people in your party.

Guyanese Chow Mein

The noodles in this rich, umami-blasted chow mein are so thick, you kind of only need one per person. Good luck getting your group to follow that rule.

Trini-Chinese Chicken

Our favorite of Lucia’s big entrees. On a recent visit, they were doing a special Jamaican jerk rub on the bird, and after a few bites, we told our server twice to tell the chef to put it permanently on the menu. Here’s hoping.
