‘Spider-Man,’ ‘The Odyssey’ fuel record-breaking 2026 summer box office

For much of the post-COVID era, it has been an uncertain time for Hollywood and movie theaters, but this summer offers a glimmer of hope for the entertainment industry.

“I have to admit going into 2026, I didn’t think that the theatrical model would rebound the way it has,” film critic and podcast host Christian Toto told Fox News Digital. “We’re seeing some of the summer movies just really overperforming in a dramatic way.”

The movie box office has generated over $4.5 billion this summer according to Box Office Mojo, the highest gross since 2019.

Blockbuster hits have been shattering records. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which continues to dominate at the box office grossing more than $860 million domestically and over $2.2 billion globally, has become the second-highest domestic grosser of all time and third-highest globally, while Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” has grossed more than $1.5 billion globally and is now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Rotten Tomatoes box office columnist Erik Childress said the summer box office was packed with “everything,” including original movies, small-budget features shattering expectations and top grossers like “Spider-Man.”

“There will always be sequels and franchises to lean on but theaters are filling up with people who want to see movies. We already have almost as many $100 million grossers (18) as we did last year (20) and there is likely another seven more in waiting this year to have the most we’ve seen since the pandemic and streaming gave everyone the Chicken Littles in their attitude toward the theatrical experience dying,” Childress told Fox News Digital. “The box office is going to hit $9 billion for the first time since 2019 and maybe even get to the lauded $10 billion the industry has been chasing since before COVID hit.”

In addition to tentpole movies, low-budget horror films from young YouTubers have also defied gravity at the box office. Curry Barker’s “Obsession,” which defied odds by increasing its weekend grosses for multiple weeks, cracked over $500 million at the global box office, outpacing “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” the latest big-budget “Star Wars” entry. And Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms,” made for a modest $10 million, grossed more than $81 million its opening weekend and went on to gross $390 million globally.

Toto said movies like “Obsession” caught everyone off-guard.

“It somehow connected with a younger audience and in a way that made them want to come back for more. It made them tell their friends. And I think that film was just really the sensation of the summer,” Toto told Fox News Digital.

The Hollywood in Toto founder said he’s been encouraged by the box office results but stressed that Hollywood needs to continue the momentum by producing “compelling entertainment.”

“I think what this summer has shown is that if you put really compelling content out there, people will come,” Toto said. “We love the ‘Toy Story’ movies, but you’ve got to put out an ‘Obsession’ now and then. You’ve got to put out something that people haven’t seen before that says, ‘Well, this speaks to me and my generation.’ That matters.”
