Michael Jackson’s songs are back on global music charts

Michael’s cinematic triumph has propelled Michael Jackson back into the music scene. The biopic, featuring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, has ignited a renewed global interest in the King of Pop’s music, resulting in unprecedented streaming figures long after his peak popularity. Michael, which debuted on April 24, quickly enabled MJ to regain his status on the global charts, with numerous tracks from years past. The prominent Hollywood biopic is helmed by Antoine Fuqua, recognized for his compelling biographical narratives. Michael’s story emphasizes the icon’s creative journey, musical brilliance, and the challenges of fame.

The film chronicles the early years and rapid ascent of Michael Jackson, from his time in the Jackson 5 to his emergence as a worldwide pop sensation. Despite facing scrutiny regarding its portrayal of the singer’s later years, the biopic has proven to be a financial success.

Following the film’s release, the artist experienced his highest domestic streaming week in 17 years since his passing in 2009. Recent industry data indicates that MJ’s solo catalog achieved the highest weekly streaming numbers of his career in the United States during the week of April 24–30. His tracks amassed approximately 137.5 million official on-demand streams, representing a significant rise from his previous record. Individual song streams also soared to nearly 56 million during this timeframe, according to Luminate, reflecting a 146% increase and more than doubling his prior peak. This surpassed earlier records that were primarily influenced by seasonal trends surrounding classics like Thriller during Halloween.

Thriller climbs back on Billboard charts

This renewed interest has directly impacted the charts. Jackson’s iconic album Thriller re-entered the Billboard 200, rising to No. 7 with 45,000 equivalent album units sold, a remarkable 425% increase from the previous week. This marks the album’s best chart performance since December 2022, when its 40th anniversary edition propelled it to the same position. Aside from that notable re-release, the legendary record had not reached this level since June 1984, when it occupied the No. 6 position. Earlier in that decade, Thriller dominated the charts with an impressive 37-week run at No. 1 between 1983 and 1984, a record that remains the longest for a solo artist’s album in Billboard 200 history.

Compilation albums like Number Ones and The Essential Michael Jackson also made a return to the charts. His iconic track Billie Jean re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 as younger listeners discovered the artist through the film, while longtime fans revisited his music. This achievement makes Michael Jackson the first artist to enter the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart across six different decades: the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.

The revival extends beyond Michael Jackson’s solo work. Songs recorded with The Jackson 5 and later The Jacksons have also seen a significant resurgence. Their tracks experienced a notable increase in streaming as audiences revisited the family group’s classic hits from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Michael’s box office achievements, sequel

Michael’s financial success has been equally impressive. Industry experts predict the film could potentially surpass the $1 billion mark at the global box office, positioning it among the most commercially successful music biopics ever made. The film’s conclusion reportedly suggests a sequel, sparking speculation that a follow-up could explore later stages of Jackson’s life and career.

MJ’s music attracts new audiences

If a sequel is produced, tracks from MJ’s later works, such as Black or White, Remember the Time, Will You Be There, and Scream, could see a similar rise on streaming platforms. There is also speculation that a subsequent film may delve deeper into his collaborations and family dynamics, potentially highlighting Janet Jackson, who reportedly had limited representation in the initial film.
