The current highest-grossing movie of all time goes to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi film Avatar, with a worldwide box-office gross of over $2.9 billion. Avengers: Endgame follows closely behind with over $2.7 billion, while the second Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, comes third with over $2.3 billion. Rounding out the top five highest-grossing movies are another James Cameron production, Titanic, and the hit animation sequel Ne Zha 2, which have grossed over $2.2 billion each.
Of these commercially successful gems, one is back in the spotlight thanks to streaming, as it is dominating global charts right in time for Valentine’s Day. Titled Titanic, the tragic romance is another Cameron favorite, which was shot under challenging circumstances that cemented the director’s formidable reputation as the scariest man in Hollywood. Released in 1997, it was the highest-grossing film of all time until Cameron’s next film, Avatar, and won eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Earlier this week, Titanic became a smash hit on Pluto TV in the U.S. again as the #1 title, and while it no longer holds the spot, it is still among the top 5 most-watched on the streamer. It is also surging on Disney+ in South American territories, as well as on the Apple TV store and Google in Europe. The remarkable movie tells the story of two young lovers, Jack and Rose, from different backgrounds who meet and fall in love on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the unsinkable R.M.S. Titanic. Not only was it a financial success, but critics also loved Titanic as it boasts a Certified Fresh 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Titanic’ Established James Cameron as “The Scariest Man In Hollywood”
While creating Titanic, Cameron was a perfectionist who often scared the cast and crew that they felt he had an evil alter ego, nicknaming him “Mij” — Jim spelled backwards. Kate Winslet, who portrays Rose, also previously admitted, “There were times when I was genuinely frightened of him. Jim has a temper like you wouldn’t believe.”
Meanwhile, another star, Bill Paxton, who was familiar with Cameron’s work ethic from his earlier experience with him on Aliens, wasn’t so surprised about the difficulties, as he noted that the filmmaker is not the type who “has the time to win hearts and minds.” Other stars attached to Titanic are co-lead Leonardo DiCaprio, along with Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Danny Nucci, and David Warner.
