Bay Area filmmakers are ascendant on Hollywood’s power spectrum in a new ranking, with Oakland native Ryan Coogler trailing only Christopher Nolan and Petaluma director Kane Parsons the youngest director on the list.
Coogler, who rose to fame with the “Black Panther” movies and won his first Oscar in March for his “Sinners” original screenplay, sits No. 2 on “The 100 Most Powerful Directors in Hollywood,” a ranking compiled by Vulture after polling agents, executives, producers, publicists and journalists. The filmmakers were evaluated using six criteria: the consistency of their body of work, commercial bankability, creative control, prestige, reputation and future potential. The list was published Tuesday, July 21.
Nolan, whose current film “The Odyssey” has become a cultural event and whose last film “Oppenheimer” dominated the 2024 Academy Awards, unsurprisingly tops the list.
At 21 years old, Parsons is the youngest on the list (No. 29), while Ridley Scott, whose latest film “The Dog Stars” opens on Aug. 28, is the oldest at 88 (No. 25).
