‘Blair Witch’ Star Resurfaces After Years Away From Hollywood to Reveal Why She’s Skipping the Reboot

Heather Donahue became an overnight sensation when she starred in the 1999 psychological horror film The Blair Witch Project.

Less than 10 years after her breakout role, Donahue traded Hollywood for a quieter life, becoming a medical marijuana farmer, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Fans who remember her as the brunette teenager in the signature knit beanie from The Blair Witch Project may be surprised by how different she looks today.

In the film, Donahue appeared alongside Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams as fictionalized versions of themselves who vanish in the woods while filming a documentary about the Blair Witch.

Although the movie became a box office phenomenon, Donahue earned little from its success. In April 2024, Donahue and her costars spoke to Variety and published an open letter calling on the studio to provide retroactive and future residuals and give the original cast a voice in where the franchise goes next.

Now 51 and going by the name Rei Hance, Donahue has resurfaced to explain why she turned down a role in the franchise’s upcoming reboot.

Her remarks surfaced amid news that Lionsgate and Blumhouse are moving ahead under director Dylan Clark, with James Wan and Jason Blum producing. Leonard and Williams signed on, but Donahue was the only one to stay out.

“There seems to be some willful confusion about my involvement with the reboot,” she wrote in a Facebook comment responding to a June 7 post. “I want to clarify that I am not participating.”

She said the deal “raised difficult long-term questions about rights, future technological use of identity and voice, the ability to speak freely, and compensation,” according to Deadline.

“I genuinely wish everyone involved well,” she added. “But preserving my autonomy mattered more to me.”

Today, Donahue lives in Freedom, Maine, where she has served in local government, as reported by BDN.
