When Bob Mackie died at 87 on Sept. 14, 2026, he left behind more than six decades of work in fashion and costume design. His résumé also reads like a who’s who of Hollywood and music history.
Mackie became particularly famous for his longtime creative partnership with Cher, but the singer was only one of the many entertainment icons who wore his designs.
Who Did Bob Mackie Design For?
Cher was arguably Mackie’s most recognizable longtime client. The designer created hundreds of looks for her television appearances, concerts and red carpet events, helping establish the extravagant visual style that became part of her identity.
Carol Burnett was another major part of Mackie’s career. He designed costumes for the entire run of The Carol Burnett Show, including the famous curtain dress Burnett, 93, wore while parodying Gone with the Wind. That costume is now part of the Smithsonian’s collection.
Mackie also worked with Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Elton John and other major performers. His designs became known for sequins, rhinestones, feathers, dramatic silhouettes and a sense of theatricality that made them instantly recognizable.
His connection to Marilyn Monroe dates back to the beginning of his career. While working for designer Jean Louis, Mackie sketched the famous gown Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
Mackie’s influence also reached Barbie.
His Bob Mackie Barbie collectible dolls debuted in 1982, and the designs remain popular with collectors. His official website notes that the dolls were created as sophisticated fantasy designs rather than traditional children’s fashion.
Across his career, Mackie earned nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and three Oscar nominations. His work helped make costumes an essential part of a performer’s identity and ensured that the stars who wore his designs would be remembered for them.
