The series which began it’s life in 2001 will release its final film in 2028
A ‘bonkers’ Hollywood film franchise with 11 films has dropped on Netflix that fans adore and are manifesting they’ll get more of.
It feels like in the world of cinema today, everything has to be a franchise. Marvel may be to blame for this, due to the resounding success of their cinematic universe.
Launching with Iron Man in 2008, the MCU has released 37 films in under two decades. On top of this, there’s a Spider-Man and Avengers film coming out this year, and 26 canon television series also vital to knowing all the lore.

With Hollywood noticing how much money the MCU was bringing in, it soon became clear that everything had to be a franchise. Star Wars fatigue got so bad that The Mandalorian and Grogu flopped in cinemas just last month.
It’s becoming more apparent that audiences want good movies without having to suffer burnout. DC just learned this lesson the hard way, with Supergirl being savaged by critics just one year after the Superman reboot looked to have James Gunn’s new cinematic universe off to a good start.
Outside of Marvel, the less is more approach is often one that’s worth banking on. There’s a reason why James Bond remains a cultural staple over 60 years after its first film hit the big screen.
However, there is one franchise that began life as a humble action flick before viewers demanded it raise the takes to levels no one could have imagined. Thankfully, Netflix added every single entry to their catalogue on Friday (July 3).
In the summer of 2001, The Fast and the Furious hit the big screen to major success. It followed the late Paul Walker as a cop named Brian O’Conner who was trying to bring down Vin Diesel’s notorious street racer Dominic ‘Dom’ Toretto.
Basically Point Break with cars, The Fast and Furious began life humbly. The main conflict of the film was Brian trying to stop Dom and his gang from stealing DVD players.
After making over $200 million at the box office, 2 Fast 2 Furious saw Walker return in a Miami Vice inspired adventure, before a completely new cast were brought in for 2006’s Tokyo Drift. Once Vin Diesel returned for the fourth film in 2009, there was no stopping The Fast and Furious franchise.
Each film saw the action intensified, cars were doing things that completely defied the laws of physics. Who can forget when Dom managed to keep up with an airplane in Fast & Furious 6 or when he used a grapple gun to fling his car over a giant cliff in F9.
Things may have gone too far in F9 when Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson went to space or when Idris Elba had superpowers in Hobbs & Shaw. That being said, the franchise has made over $7 billion, so clearly people have a hunger for the crazy stunts.
Not to mention that over the course of the series, The Rock, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren, John Cena, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron are just some of the famous faces who have entered the fold.
Fast X, the 11th in the series when you include Hobbs & Shaw, came out in 2023. Due to it being the sixth-most expensive film ever made, Universal have made fans wait to see if the demand is there for a 12th film.
Thankfully, Vin Diesel announced earlier in the year that the series will conclude with Fast Forever. Set to be released in 2028, it will bring an end to the story that’s been going on for over 20 years and will likely feature the biggest stunts yet.
Announcing the film with a picture of him and Walker, Vin Diesel said: “No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours. One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts Forever. March 17th 2028! FAST FOREVER.”
Every Fast and Furious film is now available to stream on Netflix
