Last week saw the closure of three productions, with Death of a Salesman and Cats: The Jellicle Ball reaching new highs in the final week of their runs.
The typically high-grossing play, starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, saw its highest box office yet of $2.5 million over its final seven performances and was the highest grossing show in the industry last week. The average ticket price shot up to $239.61, which was also the highest in the industry last week. Still, the play, which was capitalized for up to $8.9 million, has not announced recoupment after playing its final performance Aug. 9.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball also hit the highest gross of its run, ending its final week with a gross of $1.8 million, capacity above 100 percent and an average ticket price of $193.92, also a new high for the production. The revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber show had a shorter-than-expected run with a final performance Aug. 8, after about five months on Broadway.
Solo show Every Brilliant Thing ended its Broadway run Sunday, with Tracee Ellis Ross closing out the production. The show began with Daniel Radcliffe in February and then saw Mariska Hargitay take over the reins in May, before Ross took over in July. The play, which announced recoupment in May, closed out its final week with a gross of $886,815 and capacity close to 100 percent.
After Death of a Salesman, Hamilton was the next highest grossing show last week with $2.3 million, followed by The Lion King with $2.2 million. Ragtime, which is nearing the end of its run on Aug. 16, brought in $1.85 million, slightly below its high last week. MJ was the fifth highest grossing show with $1.84 million.
