Chuck Russell, who employed groundbreaking visual effects while directing such box office hits as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob and The Mask, has died. He was 74.
Russell died unexpectedly Wednesday at his home in a San Diego suburb, his wife, Ania, told The Hollywood Reporter. She found him unresponsive and called 911, and fire department personnel were unable to revive him. “He was such a wonderful guy, he meant everything to me,” she said.
Russell also helmed Eraser (1996), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; Bless This Child (2000), starring Kim Basinger; and The Scorpion King (2002), featuring Dwayne Johnson in his first prominent role.
After writing the screenplay for the Dennis Quaid-starring horror thriller Dreamscape (1984), Russell made his directorial debut with New Line Cinema’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), which reinvigorated the Freddy Krueger franchise by raking in almost as much at the box office ($44.8 million) as the first two films combined.
He directed and wrote with frequent collaborator Frank Darabont the 1988 remake of the horror film The Blob, then followed with The Mask (1994), starring Jim Carrey as a prankster who discovers an ancient mask and fights crime.
That film, made for $18 million, grossed $351.6 million and came away with an Oscar nomination for best visual effects (he worked with George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic to create those).

Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, on May 9, 1952, Charles Raymond Russell attended the University of Illinois, where he wrote and directed one-act plays. In Hollywood, he started out as a production assistant on Cannonball! and as a production supervisor and second assistant director on Bobby Jo and the Outlaw, both released in 1976.
He was an executive producer on Hell Night (1981) when he first met Darabont, a production assistant on the film who would co-write Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and contribute uncredited script revisions to Eraser. (The pair also were executive producers on 2004’s Collateral, directed by Michael Mann.)
In the 1980s, Russell also produced movies including Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985) and Rodney Dangerfield’s Back to School (1986).
In her review of The Blob, Janet Maslin in The New York Times called the movie “new and improved. It’s a more professional effort in every way. The special effects look sickeningly good, and the actors show signs of being able to act, which could not be said of any members of the original cast — not even Steve McQueen, who was Steven McQueen then and appearing in his first major film role.”
In The Mask, Russell directed Carrey in a florescent green mask that turned the actor into an uncontrollable, large-toothed superhero. The oversized teeth of the character were originally to be used only during silent scenes, but Carrey learned to talk with them on to make his character even more cartoon-like.
Russell said he had “quite a battle with the studio” in order to hire Cameron Diaz as his leading lady. “The chemistry was so strong between her and Jim in the readings, I just had to fight for Cameron in that role,” he said in a 2022 interview.
After a long break from the movies, Russell directed I Am Wrath (2016), starring John Travolta, and they worked together again in Paradise City (2022). His last film was a 2024 remake of Witchboard, which he wrote and directed.
In addition to his wife of nearly 19 years, survivors include his children, Logan, Riley and Carlyn, and his sister, Anne.
Russell described his career as “a bit of a magical mystery tour and a bit of an adventure.”
“I always compare a career in films to running away to join the circus; every movie is an entirely different experience,” he added. “There are amazing people to work with; from truck drivers to ballerinas to movie stars, everyone is essential to the process and eternally fascinating to me.
“People have mentioned in my career how people have done different genres. I started in horror, so people thought I was going to stick with that and become like a John Carpenter. I love movies, I’m a movie fan, and I think I would get horribly bored if I just stuck with one genre.”
