Dana Delany felt starstruck by Robert Redford.

The 70-year-old actress worked with the Hollywood legend’s son, Jamie Redford, on Spin, the 2003 drama movie that also starred Ryan Merriman, Stanley Tucci, Paula Garces and Ruben Blades, and Dana has shared her memories of meeting Redford for the first time.

Speaking to People, Dana explained: “Bob was so supportive. He loved Jamie.

“We had a little pre-dinner before the movie screened. I was sitting there with a plate on my lap, like a buffet thing. All of a sudden, I looked to my right, and there was Robert Redford on his knees in front of me, telling me how good I was in the movie, and he wanted me to know before all the hubbub started.

“I was so freaked out that Robert Redford was on his knees telling me this because it’s all I ever wanted in life.”

Dana was a long-time admirer of Redford’s, but she froze when confronted with one of her acting heroes. And she now looks back on the meeting with a bit of regret.

She continued: “Then I said, ‘Oh, thank you,’ and I turned away because I couldn’t handle it. I was just so freaked, and I regret that completely.

“The poor guy got off of his knees and just walked away.”

Despite this, Dana still has fond memories of Redford, who died in September 2025, aged 89.

Dana said: “He knew the effect that he had on people.”

Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson previously revealed that Redford inspired her to try her hand at directing.

The 41-year-old actress worked with the Hollywood icon on the 1998 Western movie The Horse Whisperer, and Scarlett revealed that he ultimately influenced her decision to become a director.

She told Extra: “I remember watching Bob choreograph a really complicated scene in the riding arena and he was blocking it out and decide when the camera was gonna go … watching him do that and then have this intimate conversation with me as an actor.

“I just felt like it just seemed like a very interesting job and there was a lot to do. And I like that. I like being busy on set.”

Scarlett made her own directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, the drama movie starring June Squibb, and the film star revealed that she loved working with the veteran actress.

Scarlett recalled: “As soon as I saw June’s first take of the first scene we shot, I knew we would work well together.”
