Elon Musk is a fan of the Armie Hammer-starrer Citizen Vigilante.

After Citizen Vigilante was banned in Germany because regulators refused to grant the film an age rating over concerns that its violent content could incite violence against immigrants, Musk posted the full movie to his X account, which has more than 240 million followers, making it available to watch for 48 hours. Uwe Boll, the German filmmaker who wrote and directed Citizen Vigilante, also shared the film. While it’s no longer available on either account, the movie has since been reposted by X users.

Citizen Vigilante stars Hammer as Sanders, a vigilante who takes justice into his own hands. According to Apple TV, the official synopsis reads: “Living in Croatia, a wealthy American businessman transforms into a feared vigilante who targets violent criminals, rapists and corrupt judges. As his brutal campaign gains traction online and across the media, he soon becomes a wanted criminal and an unlikely public hero.”

On Saturday, Boll announced on X that a sequel, Citizen Vigilante 2, is slated for release in 2027. It’s unclear whether Hammer will return. THR reached out to Boll for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.

Musk also replied to a post on X showing that Citizen Vigilante had climbed to No. 2 on Apple TV, writing, “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.”

Its star, Hammer, is known for acclaimed films including The Social Network and Call Me by Your Name. Citizen Vigilante marks one of his first leading roles since he was dropped by his agency, WME, and largely disappeared from Hollywood following allegations of sexual assault in 2021. Hammer denied the allegations, and after a lengthy investigation, Los Angeles prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against him in 2023.

In a rare interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hammer recalled learning that Boll wanted him for the project.

“I’m pretty sure I cried,” he said. “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children. I would have done a fucking cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again.”

Hammer also reflected on the allegations and their impact on his career.

“I made these problems for myself. This didn’t happen to me by a fluke accident. I didn’t do what people are saying I did. But I brought very dangerous and unsafe people into my life, and I pissed off people in my life — and here we are.”
