The beloved Aquamarine franchise is officially making a comeback. Nearly 20 years after the fan-favorite 2006 fantasy comedy premiered, Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot for a brand-new television series, with original star Emma Roberts returning in a new role behind and in front of the camera.
Roberts is set to executive produce the series and will also make a guest appearance, reprising her role as Claire Brown from the original film. Her return marks a nostalgic reunion with one of the movies that helped launch her acting career.
Rather than serving as a direct sequel, the new Aquamarine series introduces an original story centered on a teenage girl named Coral. After moving to a picturesque seaside town, Coral begins investigating the mysterious disappearance of her mother. Along the way, she discovers an incredible family secret—her mother was a mermaid. As Coral’s own magical abilities begin to emerge, she must uncover the truth while dangerous secrets hidden beneath the ocean threaten both her family and her new home.

Fans of the original film will also be excited to learn that director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum is returning to direct and executive produce the pilot. Sarah Watson is attached as writer, while original producer Susan Cartsonis also joins the project as an executive producer.
Released in 2006, Aquamarine starred Emma Roberts, Sara Paxton, and JoJo as two best friends who discover a stranded mermaid after a powerful storm. Based on Alice Hoffman’s 2001 novel, the coming-of-age fantasy became a cult favorite thanks to its heartfelt friendship, beachside setting, and memorable performances.
Roberts has previously expressed interest in revisiting the franchise, noting that the film has found a new generation of fans through TikTok. With Disney now expanding the story into a television series, longtime viewers and newcomers alike will soon have the chance to dive back into the magical world of Aquamarine.
