Courtney B. Vance is an award-winning actor who is a powerful presence from the stage to the screen. His debut as Spc. Abraham ‘Doc’ Johnson in Hamburger Hill launched a prolific cinematic career that includes historically noteworthy films such as The Hunt for Red October, The Preacher’s Wife, and The Adventures of Huck Finn. His most recent film, the live action Lilo & Stitch in which he plays Cobra Bubbles, made cinematic history as the largest Memorial Day Weekend opening of all time. As the number one film around the world, it earned over $182 million dollars domestically and $361 million globally in four days.
From Courtney’s stunning portrayal of Johnnie Cochran in FX’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, to the beloved and pivotal character “Uncle George” in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama horror series Lovecraft Country, his star turn in Nat Geo’s Genius: Aretha as Rev. C. L. Franklin, and Hap Hairston in Broadway’s Lucky Guy, he has earned two Emmys, a Tony, a Critics’ Choice Award, a Black Reel TV Award, and multiple NAACP Image Awards, as well as SAG, Golden Globe, and Hollywood Critics Association nominations.
Vance is the recipient of the Bounce Trumpet Awards Excellence in Entertainment Award and the ABFF Honors Award for Excellence in the Arts. He also earned a Grammy nomination for his narration of Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s book Accessory to War.
His other television projects include 61st Street, a criminal justice drama for which he earned an AAFCA TV Honors Award, and Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie, a Hulu horror drama series. Vance currently stars in the second season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians as “Zeus.”
In tribute to his deep love of history, Courtney championed and narrated the first-ever audiobook for David Levering Lewis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning W.E.B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race. Volume One was released earlier this year. Volume Two will be released in February 2026.
Vance has also established a footprint in producing alongside his wife, Angela Bassett. Their production company, Bassett Vance Productions, is in partnership with 20th Television to develop and executive produce comedy, drama, limited series, and TV movies for linear networks and streamers, with an emphasis on platforms across Disney Entertainment Television. The company’s first feature film, Heist 88, in which Courtney also stars, premiered on Showtime Networks as one of 2023’s most watched original films on the network, as well as aired on Paramount+. The film earned three NAACP Image Award nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Television Movie and Outstanding Television Movie Drama, and won the award for Outstanding Writing for a Television Movie Drama.
Courtney’s book, The Invisible Ache: Black Men Identifying Their Pain and Reclaiming Their Power co-written with Dr. Robin L. Smith and award-winning journalist Charisse Jones, earned him the Author of the Year Award at the National Book Club Conference.
