The release date of filmmaker F1: The Movie on streamer Apple TV has finally been revealed after the sleeper hit took the summer box office by storm on its way to becoming the the top-grossing sports film of all time, among other records. It’s also the first major theatrical win for the tech giant’s movie division.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, the pic will become available on streaming service Apple TV around the globe on Dec. 12, Apple Original Films announced Monday. (Apple TV is going through a major rebranding, having previously been known as Apple TV+.)

Legacy Hollywood studios continue to be suspicious of a streamer’s commitment to a traditional theatrical window, but Apple and Amazon MGM Studios are vowing to give certain event films a proper theatrical window in hopes of boosting a movie’s visibility, versus sending a title straight to streaming in hopes of luring new subscribers or stop existing subs from bolting.

Apple Original Films certainly lived up to its word when it came to F1, which opened in theaters at the end of June and is among the top-10 grossing pics of the year with more than $629 million in worldwide ticket sales. The pic broke numerous records — including becoming the the top-grossing live-action film of Brad Pitt’s career, not adjusted for inflation. The earned an A CinemaScore, along with a coveted 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world embrace F1 The Movie ’in theaters,” Jerry Bruckheimer, the film’s producer,” said in a statement. “Now, we’re beyond excited to bring this exhilarating, cinematic ride to fans everywhere through Apple TV’s unparalleled global reach. Partnering with Apple and Formula 1 has been an incredible journey, and we’re proud that even more viewers, from every corner of the world, will get to experience the heart-pounding action and passion

Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem also star in the big-budget tentpole, which was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends as the team competed against the titans of the sport. The film is produced by Bruckheimer, Kosinski, seven-time Formula world champion Lewis Hamilton, Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Chad Oman. Kosinski directed from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, based on story by Kosinski and Kruger.

Apple Original Films partnered with Warner Bros., with the latter distributing and helping to market the film around the globe.

Ahead of its debut on Apple TV, the film continues to be available for digital ownership on participating digital platforms, including AppleTV, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango At Home, and more.

Beyond the box office, the F1 The Album soundtrack has seen 600,000 albums sold worldwide, and is nearing one billion global streams. Currently dominating Billboard’s Top Movie Songs chart with seven of the top ten tracks, the album is powered by Tate McRae’s two-time VMA-nominated smash hit “Just Keep Watching.” With over four billion views across short-form video platforms, the album has become a defining music moment of 2025 and a crucial part of the film’s cultural impact, Apple noted in its release.
