“I know a lot of you are used to being in a dark room alone, missing calls from your family,” comedian Morgan Jay told the crowd while emceeing the boozy, brisk Golden Trailer Awards last night in LA, before passing out party favors. “To make you guys feel more comfortable, I brought some Zyns and Celsius.”
The 26th annual ceremony celebrated the best feature film, TV, digital and print campaigns of the year. Held at the swanky Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, the ceremony was hosted by Jay, known to 10M TikTok followers for viral videos of his expert crowd work featuring an auto tune mic. Before the ceremony even began, the party was in full swing as hundreds of editors descended upon the open bar. “This is so much more fun than The Clios,” one attendee said before chugging an IPA.
And the revelry didn’t stop in the lobby: Within 15 minutes of the show’s start, I was offered beer by ushers no less than three times. Halfway through the ceremony, bartenders began rolling drink carts up the aisles. “Let’s hear it for the open bar,” presenter Kate Flannery told the crowd (to big cheers).
You can’t blame folks in this industry for wanting to cut loose, given some bleak news lately. Upon seeing line of seat fillers outside, one nominated trailer editor quipped, “Guess they’ll be taking Trailer Park’s seats,” referring to the famed movie marketing company’s recent shutdown of its film trailer division.
But the show moved at a delightfully quick pace — without a single speech above 20 seconds long. (Adrien Brody could take notes.)
“Project Hail Mary” emerged as the night’s big winner, taking home trophies (with tiny golden trailers atop them) for Best Drama, Best Fantasy/Adventure, Best Music and Best of Show.
