Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass is a throwback to a funnier time. The hilarious slapstick comedy is exactly what’s been missing from cinemas.
Over the last decade or more, where have all the fun, ridiculous comedies gone? Blockbuster cinema has taken over, and that’s part of what makes Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass, so refreshing; not only because it was was made, and made well, but because it’s out in theatres.
From the premise to the cameos, the film is full of big, goofy jokes, silly action, and it nails the jokes, tone, and atmosphere of this Hollywood story.
Zoey Deutch stars as Gail Daughtry, an average, small town hairdresser. When her husband-to-be has sex with the one and only Jennifer Aniston–his celebrity sex pass–Gail decides that she has to go hunt down Jon Hamm in Hollywood. Her plan is to make things even before her wedding, with the help of a few friends.
The film is a mischievous take on The Wizard of Oz, complete with Hamm as the wizard. There are lots of cameos, and the core cast is fantastic. Joining Gail is John Slattery as himself, Ben Wang as Caleb, Miles Gutierrez-Riley as Otto, and even co-writer Ken Marino as Vincent. Plus watch for all the fun cameos, including Weird Al Yankovic with a sub-machine gun.
I love how much fun director David Wain clearly had with this cast, with this offbeat story, and I hope it inspires a whole new generation of comedies in theatres.
Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass is a blast, and while it’s not perfect, it’s a fun watch. It’s big on laughs, quick jokes, and it’s absolutely quotable, too. The film is out now in theatres.
Watch my review above for more about why I enjoyed the film and the cast.
Synopsis: Small town hairdresser Gail Daughtry is engaged to her devoted high school sweetheart, Tom. Her life takes a turn when a trip to a book signing leads to Tom meeting–and sleeping–with his “celebrity pass”. Reeling from the betrayal, Gail impulsively joins her friend Otto on a trip to Los Angeles, where a psychic convinces Gail that the only way to save her marriage is to “even the scales” with her own celebrity pass: Jon Hamm. Thus begins an epic journey through Tinseltown as Gail and Otto join forces with a talent agency assistant, a paparazzo, and actor John Slattery, all in the search for Hamm. Along the way, they collide with celebrities and are hunted by a group of Italian assassins as they get ever closer to finding the elusive star.
