Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across KwaZulu-Natal have received a financial and developmental boost, with the Hollywood Foundation increasing its investment in the 2026 Bambelela Business Awards to R1.135 million.

Now in its third year in the province, the initiative targets township and rural businesses, aiming to strengthen entrepreneurship, job creation and local economic development in areas where access to funding and support remains limited.

A total of 128 MSMEs were selected to participate in this year’s programme following a competitive application process, reflecting strong demand for business support across the province. Applicants came from areas including eThekwini Municipality, Empangeni, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Greytown, Port Shepstone and Ulundi.

Of the qualifying applicants, 66% were women-owned businesses, underscoring the growing role of female entrepreneurs in driving economic activity and community upliftment in KwaZulu-Natal.

The foundation said the increased funding—up from R1 million in previous years—will be distributed among 20 MSMEs that demonstrate both commercial viability and community impact.

Speaking on the initiative, Hollywood Foundation public relations officer Vuyisile Ngobese said the awards highlight the strength of entrepreneurship in underserved communities.

“The Bambelela Business Awards continues to demonstrate the incredible entrepreneurial potential that exists within township and rural communities across KwaZulu-Natal. Through this initiative, we are intentionally investing in businesses that are not only contributing to economic activity but are also creating meaningful impact within their communities,” Ngobese said.

She added that supporting small businesses remains critical to economic participation and job creation, particularly in communities facing structural challenges.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, who delivered the keynote address at the awards ceremony, welcomed the initiative and emphasised the importance of partnerships in driving inclusive growth.

“As the provincial government, we are committed to working with organisations like the Hollywood Foundation to expand opportunities, empower our people, and build a stronger, more inclusive KwaZulu-Natal,” Ntuli said.

Top honours in the 2026 awards went to Hala Lisa (Pty) Ltd, which secured the first prize of R145,000. Pitchbright (Pty) Ltd took second place with R115,000, while Makoti Boot Camp (Pty) Ltd placed third, receiving R85,000.

The Bambelela Business Awards form part of broader efforts to strengthen township and rural economies by supporting entrepreneurs with funding, development opportunities and access to networks needed for long-term sustainability.
