I am going to give you a few more moments to take a look at the above photo of Charles Melton. It’s actually necessary for what I’m about to say next.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Charles is currently in talks to star in the upcoming Naruto live-action film. It’s a move that makes total sense. For those who are more anime-unaware, it is one of the biggest IPs to come from Japan. The film is also being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose current film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is on track to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

But for those who have never seen a single episode of Naruto, you might be surprised to hear that the character, Kakashi Hatake, wears a mask the entire time. Sure, several characters speculate that he’s actually hot underneath the piece of cotton he refuses to pull down, but still, we gotta think about the optics here. Charles Melton, did you forget to look in a mirror before you took this meeting?

This is coming right after the news that he was in talks with Marvel to play Beast in the upcoming X-Men film. But he was not announced at the recent D23 panel, which, along with this news, likely means he’s no longer in the running for the role. Even if he did get it, Beast is known for rocking a lot of scruff thanks to his mutant abilities, which once again would have just hidden his face completely.

So we have to ask: Hollywood, why are you trying to hide Charles Melton’s face? Or better yet, Charles, who is telling you to hide that incredible jawline and stellar cheekbones that we first fell in love with on Riverdale?! What does it mean for the future of Hollywood if one of the hottest guys on the scene is going for roles where he’s hiding his face the entire time?

Quite frankly, it is a damn shame to see this happening, especially after Charles absolutely blew us away with his performances in May December and Beef. It is confusing why he isn’t absolutely everywhere right now on the big screen, million-dollar smile and all.

If this is his way of finally getting his bag and more of the recognition he deserves, so be it. Frankly, it is a win to see him going out for big roles like these. But please let the next one be a modern-day story that doesn’t involve any masks or anything that could hide those cheekbones, because we know it could start a ‘ship war for the ages.
