Olivia Wilde has welcomed the recent trend of age-gap movie romances.

The 42-year-old actress stars alongside Cooper Hoffman, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Johnny Knoxville, Margaret Cho, Roxane Mesquida, Charli XCX, and Daveed Diggs in I Want Your Sex, the new erotic comedy thriller film directed by Gregg Araki, and Olivia has admitted to being a big fan of Hollywood’s latest “trend”.

Olivia – who previously dated pop star Harry Styles – told The Hollywood Reporter: “Audiences are really open to a trend that for so long was dominated by the traditional older man, younger woman narrative.

“I think it’s exciting that people are breaking out of their boxes in different ways.”

Olivia admitted to being a huge fan of Babygirl, the erotic thriller film written, directed, and produced by Halina Reijn.

The actress loves that audiences are embracing “different kinds of sexy love stories”.

She said: “I loved Babygirl; I think it’s exciting that people are open to different kinds of sexy love stories.”

Olivia also observed that I Want Your Sex is distinctly different from The Invite, her other relationship comedy that came out this year.

The actress said: “It’s wild because these two characters are the two kind of sides of my personality. I love that they’re so different but they’re really in the same conversation about intimacy and growing up.

“The Invite is about growing up into a different stage of life, I think; this one is really about adolescence and the idea of maturing into an adult and what it means to experiment and the importance of experimenting.”

Meanwhile, Olivia previously explained that sex scenes haven’t been “particularly realistic” for a long time.

The actress claimed that Gen Z wants to see less sex in movies, observing that X-rated film scenes are often unrealistic.

She told Variety at the Sundance Film Festival: “I think Gen Z is pretty smart … the way that sex has been portrayed in film for a long time hasn’t been particularly realistic.

“Therefore, there’s been this movement now towards authenticity, which is really good. So I choose to interpret that statistic maybe as Gen Z saying, ‘We don’t want to see inauthenticity anymore. We want to see real relationships, and we want to have something that feels more genuine.’ So I like that.”

The Invite tells the story of a married couple experiencing a rough patch in their relationship. The couple ultimately start to engage in weekly orgies with their neighbours amid their relationship troubles.

Olivia – who directed the film – explained: “This movie is an incredibly irreverent, playful take on showing this part of the sexual revolution of a young person. The whole idea is to try things, live your life, experiment, fall on your face and get back up.

“Sex is used as a metaphor for something that’s really applicable to everybody’s experience. You’re going to go through life, and you should just be very open to what it allows you to experience.”
