Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, Tom Hanks and not one but TWO dames – Helen Mirren and Emma Thompson. We’d all watch the film with that cast, right?
Alas, no film. But all of these actors are backing a new public-benefit non-profit called RSL Media, co-founded by Blanchett. And it’s focused firmly on “turning human consent into a signal that machines can read”. Yep: AI.
RSL Media is building a ‘Consent ID’ technology designed to help people set the terms under which their identity and creative works can be used (or not) by AI models.
“AI technologies are expanding rampantly, essentially unchecked and unregulated. In order for humans to remain in front of these technologies, consent must be the first consideration,” said Blanchett inn a statement.
She described what RSL Media is building as “the industry’s first practical solution where people everywhere, not just public figures, can assert control over how their work is used by AI”. So this isn’t just about celebs.
While actors are the first wave of supporters, there is clearly some potential here for musicians too. The Music Artists Coalition is one of the launch supporters, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see some artists signing up soon.
