Hollywood films led the Nigerian box office for the weekend of May 1st to May 3rd, taking the top two spots as Michael maintained its run with N130.7 million in its second weekend, while The Devil Wears Prada debuted with N57.3 million, showing more audience turnout for foreign films, while Nollywood releases continue to perform steadily.

At number one is Michael, which earned N130.7 million in its second weekend, pushing its cumulative total to N323.6 million. The biographical drama, centred around the life and career of Michael Jackson, continues to benefit from global interest in the late pop star’s legacy. The film explores his rise to fame, creative genius, and personal struggles, drawing both music fans and general audiences to cinemas.

In second place is The Devil Wears Prada, debuting at N57.3 million and cumulatively at N62.2 million. The film, which is about a young aspiring journalist navigating the demanding world of fashion under an influential editor, stars Meryl Streep. Its return to cinemas has attracted both new viewers and audiences revisiting the story.

Nollywood title Efonroye opened in third place with N29.5 million. The historical drama tells the story of Efunroye Tinubu, an influential 19th-century businesswoman and political figure, focusing on her influence, wealth, and role in pre-colonial Yoruba society.

The Return of Arinzo placed fourth, earning N12.3 million in its fifth weekend, reaching a cumulative N333.9 million. The film follows a man who returns to his hometown after years away, confronting unresolved tensions and the consequences of his past decisions. Its continued performance highlights sustained audience interest in character-driven local stories.

In fifth position is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which brought in N10.2 million, pushing its total to N67.7 million in its third week. Directed by Lee Cronin, the film reimagines the classic supernatural tale, following a group that awakens an ancient force after uncovering a hidden tomb.

Rounding out the chart in sixth place is You, Me & Tuscany, which earned N8.3 million in its fourth weekend for a cumulative N104.8 million. The romantic drama centres on a couple whose relationship is tested during a trip to Italy, as unresolved issues begin to surface.

Despite Hollywood’s strong showing at the top, Nollywood titles remain competitive, with Efonroye and The Return of Arinzo sustaining audience attention and contributing significantly to overall box office performance.
