We check-in to the effortlessly cool 5-star hotel between the Hollywood Hills and West Hollywood streets for the ultimate Los Angeles insider stay.
Perfectly positioned beneath the Hollywood Hills on the famed Sunset Strip, The Sun Rose (formerly Pendry West Hollywood) rebranded in August 2025 and occupies the legendary House of Blues site.
Continuing that nightlife legacy, The Sun Rose West Hollywood took its new moniker from the onsite live music venue to reflect its focus on entertainment and the arts.
It captures the effervescent spirit of the Strip in a stylish, indulgent and thoughtfully designed retreat that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy and hard to leave.
Checking-in
The Sun Rose West Hollywood is part of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts portfolio of independent luxury properties under the LVX Collection.
After rebranding, the hotel retained its hospitality program and dining concepts, including a rooftop poolside restaurant, full-service spa and 24/7 gym.
While the 100-seat Live at The Sun Rose music venue takes centre stage on Sunset Boulevard, the hotel entrance is tucked away on a residential WeHo street, lending it a secluded feel despite being mere moments from shopping, dining and entertainment.
It’s close to iconic landmarks like The Comedy Store, Whisky a Go Go and Chateau Marmont, and easy walking distance to WeHo’s two other drawcard strips: Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.
The Art Deco façade reflects the Strip’s legendary glamour and its deep connection to LA’s musical legacy with an LED animation sign and sleek lines, while the Olive Drive entrance is revealed behind hedge walls, blending into the exclusive neighbourhood.
And the service is similarly attentive, yet unobtrusive. Despite my unscheduled 12:30am arrival – due to a three-hour connecting flight delay – the team was very accommodating and helpful, ensuring a seamless check-in.
An expansive driveway of chic black-and-white tiles flows into the hotel lobby, where the arresting mirrored Portal Icosahedron artwork by Anthony James draws attention and reflects The Sun Rose’s infinite experiences.
Inside, lush modular furnishings, moody lighting and pops of rich colour soften the stark lines of Art Deco and metallic accents.
The overall effect is refined chic with an edge, shining a spotlight on The Sun Rose’s mix of seclusion and style and inviting guests to dial up the hedonistic Hollywood glamour during their stay.
Located 18.5km from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the average Uber ride is around 30-40 minutes to the hotel. There is onsite valet parking from USD$75 (approximately AUD$106) per night, plus EV charging stations for USD$20 (around AUD$28) per night.
The room
The 149-key Sun Rose West Hollywood has an array of suites and rooms available, including ADA-accessible accommodations, all resplendent in SoCal style with views of either Sunset Boulevard or the Hollywood Hills.
I’m in what’s easily one of the most lush and well-appointed suites I’ve ever stayed in. My 64sqm Skyline One-Bedroom Suite is seriously spacious, comfortably sleeping up to four in a group or family with a king bedroom and foldout couch.
The bedroom features a king bed with luxury linens, a 55-inch TV and a sliding door to a separate walk-in wardrobe, including a steamer and plenty of storage space. A curtain separates the street from the bedroom, highlighting how close you are to the action.
The bathroom is also generously proportioned with a full bath and a walk-in rain shower, complete with luxury, full-size Molton Brown amenities and a vanity built for sharing before heading out to the Sunset Strip with dual sinks and a backlit makeup mirror – all within marbled surrounds.
There is another separate toilet off the hallway, which leads into the parlour and dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase sparkling views of downtown LA and the Wilshire Corridor, plus another 55-inch TV, both inviting diversions for lounging.
Just off the dining area is the minibar amenities, or divider in this case, filled with top-shelf spirits and wines, alongside a stocked fridge of craft beers, soft drinks, wine and mixers, curated snacks and a coffee maker.
Hardwood floors, wooden and metallic accents and Art Deco pieces flow throughout the suite; complemented by light grey marble, tonal prints and blue and gold-hued plush furnishings and light blue walls, bringing an oceanic ambience into the suite.
A marbled smash chocolate icosahedron, inspired by the lobby artwork, was another thoughtful touch as a welcome gift.
For the modern holidaymaker or bleisure traveller, there are plenty of power outlets, plus Bluetooth speakers and free Wi-Fi, making this hotel ideal for work or play.
Food and drink
The Sun Rose West Hollywood has six dining options, including in-room dining. The Rooftop at The Sun Rose offers elevated dining, both through its 11th-floor location and menu, with lunch (11:30am – 3pm) and dinner (5:30–10pm) sittings showcasing produce-forward California cuisine with global influences.
Casual bites and specialty cocktails are also available at The Rooftop Bar, complete with a fire and overlooking the pool with views of Sunset Boulevard and Downtown LA. Open 11:30am – 10pm, The Rooftop Bar is infinitely Instagram-worthy, awash with pretty pastel décor and a mermaid vibe with scalloped velvet chairs and sea-green tiles.
The Pool also has its own alfresco menu of small and shared bites, cocktails, wine and beer with poolside service to your lounger or table seating.
At street level and on an outdoor balcony, The Sun Rose Cafe, open 6:30am to 1pm, serves up breakfast and brunch staples, including pastries and bottomless cocktails.
On the other side, the Ritual Lobby Bar (open 5–11pm and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays) is a sumptuously decorated jewel box with rich colours and gilt accents – a classic hotel lounge with a classily edited bar menu of food, cocktails and drinks.
And for the times when you really can’t lift a finger, there is 24-hour room service that covers breakfast through to late-night dining, a children’s all-day menu and a Champagne list.
Amenities
True to its entertainment roots, The Sun Rose has many cool spaces and onsite amenities worth exploring, like a private two-lane bowling alley in the basement and a screening room for exclusive film premieres and industry events at the lobby level.
In addition, there’s the aforementioned 24/7 fitness centre with the latest Technogym Excite cardio machines and Element+ strength training, plus free weights, alongside The Sun Rose Spa with signature treatments and a regular monthly 888 Process sweat session held on the Rooftop Terrace.
The pool has theatre-style steps leading into the flush-edge pool, surrounded by chaises and sun loungers, offering a 180-degree vantage point of Los Angeles below.
As well as the live music lineup, The Sun Rose West Hollywood also stages events, such as a nightly happy hour at Ritual Lobby Bar from 5-7pm, so there’s always something happening during your stay.
The verdict
Steeped in West Hollywood glamour with an after-hours music scene grit, The Sun Rose feels both like a design-led modern hotel and a secluded hillside hideaway. The stylish surrounds showcase the sought-after nuances of the WeHo neighbourhood, reflecting that golden glow through seamless indoor-outdoor design and Cali-cool interiors. You’ll feel simultaneously removed from the LA hustle and have your finger on the pulse here. For travellers who crave an elevated stay close to all the shopping, entertainment and dining action, The Sun Rose West Hollywood is the perfect portal for an LA getaway.
